Getting Involved

A successful IPY 2007-2008 needs participation across the entire polar community and your involvement can occur at the Individual, National or International level.

  • If you are interested in IPY and would like to be kept informed of our activities, current status, and general Polar Year information, you will find that the web-site is a wide-ranging source of information and links.
  • Use the Contact mail facility to give us your contact details which we can then add to our mailing lists. As list member, you will receive IPY email updates to keep you up to date with the latest news and an IPY newsletter is also planned.
  • If you want to participate in IPY Science, Data or Education & Outreach activities, you will be able to submit proposals through the website. All Calls for submissions will be posted there.
  • Use the Contact page to pass on information on your interests which we can incorporate in an activities database.
  • If you have comments or suggestions regarding IPY 2007-2008, again use the Contact facility.
  • A list of all of events and activities relating to IPY 2007-2008 or involving IPY activities is maintained on the Events Page. Keep checking the page for updates, and be sure to let the International Programme Office know about any of your activities that could be usefully listed on the Events page.

Science Activity Planning

  • The list of Ideas and the database of Expressions of Intent (EoI) should be a first call in researching what science (and data or education & outreach) activities are being proposed for the Polar Year period (March 2007-March 2009) and finding contact details for those groups developing these plans. It is important to think beyond national scale activities when proposing IPY activities so the database provides an extensive resource for finding partners.
  • A list of all the National Committees and Points of Contact for IPY 2007-2008 can be found under National. The National Committees play an important role in coordinating and promoting IPY activities within each country so make use of them. A number have established web-sites and these should provide a source of information on national meetings, relevant opportunities and deadlines.
  • Under Links there are lists of contact details for a wide range of international organisations who are planning IPY contributions. In many cases these will be established programmes where a pulse of increased activity will occur during the Polar Year. Browsing the International Ideas and EoI databases and the websites of these International Organisations will provide a wealth of information on IPY planning.
  • IPY is promoted at a large number of science meetings each year and these are listed under Events.
  • If in doubt feel free to contact the International Programme Office which will be very willing to provide advice on all matters IPY.

National Committees

  • Listings of National Committees are placed on a seperate database and receive seperate updates from the IPO and the Joint Committee.
  • The IPO is at the disposal of National Committees to provide advice or practical assistance on IPY matters.
  • National Committees should contact the IPO directly rather than use the Contact page.

Supporting Organisations

  • A large number of organisations are supporting IPY 2007-2008 by providing resources, meeting space, materials, etc. as well as support for science and outreach activities.
  • If your organization is interested in supporting or participating in IPY 2007-2008, please contact us through the Contact page.
