IPY chart updated to version 4.0
David Carlson — July 26, 2006
We've updated our IPY chart to version 4.0. This latest version presents 218 endorsed IPY proposals: 166 in science and 52 in education and outreach. The number in each hexagon refers to the proposal ID number in the IPY Full Proposal database (scroll to the bottom of the page). An associated spreadsheet provides the full project names and lead persons for each proposal.

Here is the chart as a PDF (1.5 MB).
We intend to keep version 4 of the IPY chart in a 'stable' configuration. The overall organisation of the chart will not change. All current hexagons on the chart will stay in their present locations. Any deletions will create blank space. Any additions will only use blank spaces. Along with many of you, we have put much effort into colour layers on the chart. We share your desire that the chart not change on a weekly or monthly basis.
Special note for designers: All chart files come from Adobe Illustrator or Adobe InDesign. Each cluster of hexagons (ocean north, education and outreach both, etc.) exists in a separate Illustrator file. It takes only moments to open a cluster file, change background colour of selected (or all) hexagons, and then drop the altered file back into InDesign. The InDesign document has separate layers for background, for text, and for hexagons. By this arrangement, it would take very little effort to replace English text with text of another language.
We will share Illustrator and InDesign files. The IPY graphics department prefers that users make their own additional layers and language modifications - many of you already do this in Adobe Acrobat, for example. Please contact us for special assistance.
