PROPOSAL INFORMATION(ID No: 103)
Environment of Arctic shelf in Late Quaternary period (Environment of Arctic shelf in Late Quaternary period)
Outline
a) The systematization of lithological and mineralogical data and collecting of the padding indispensable new geologic data will be made. b) To realize the project the following methods of researches will be applied: lithostratigraphy, mineralogical, geomorphological, micropaleontological. The new information about sediments structure and on distribution Upper Quaternary sediment is permitting to reveal a features of sedimentogenesis. c) The detailed study of processes modern sedimentation in Arctic Basin will be made, and the connection of distribution the main lithologic types with processes of sedimentation are renovated. d) The maps and scheme of distribution the light and heavy minerals, and also their associations in surface layer of bottom sediments, regional lithostratigraphy sections and paleooceanological scheme of development of Arctic Basin in Late Quaternary will be constructed.

What significant advance(s) in relation to the IPY themes and targets can be anticipated from this project?
Upper Quaternary sedimentogenesis as a priority scientific direction covers development of the sediment basin applying lithostratigraphic methods. Reconstraction of sedimentogenesis peculiarities, its geological history allow to reveal the reasons of climatic changes in Late Quaternary period.
What international collaboration is involved in this project?
The cooperation with the german colleagues from Alfred Wegener Institute of Polar Researches and GEOMAR are supposed.
FIELD ACTIVITY DETAILS
Geographical location(s) for the proposed field activities:
Fram Strait, Yermak Plateau, West Spitsbergen, Norwegian-Greenland Seas
Approximate timeframe(s) for proposed field activities:
Arctic: June-August/2006 July-August/2007
Antarctic: n/a
Significant facilities will be required for this project:
To take part in international expeditions onboard RV "Polarstern" in 2006-2007 is planned. According to the approved schedule of expeditions AWI and to take part in expeditions of Institute of Oceanology are planned.
Will the project leave a legacy of infrastructure?
In activity the relationships sedimentogenes and tekhnogenes with reference to ocean water areas will be investigated. The outcomes of researches can find operational use and to be utilised by exploration services and expeditions, oil and gas production companies.
How is it envisaged that the required logistic support will be secured?
Own national polar operator
National agency
Commercial operator
Own support
Has the project been "endorsed" at a national or international level?
Russian Academy of Sciences. Organizing Committee on participation of Russian Federation in opening-up and implementation of frameworks IPY 2007/2008.
PROJECT MANAGEMENT AND STRUCTURE
Is the project a short-term expansion (over the IPY 2007-2008 timeframe) of an existing plan, programme or initiative or is it a new autonomous proposal?
New
This new proposal, which one can become the constituent of the international projects OASIS, LOIRA etc.
How will the project be organised and managed?
The project will be organized and to be operated at a national level at constant coordination with the schedules of implementation of the above mentioned international projects. The forwarding activities will be organized and are conducted pursuant to the schedules of forwarding activities of Alfred Wegener Institute and according to the schedule of expeditions of P.P.Shirshov Institute of Oceanology in 2006-2008.
What are the initial plans of the project for addressing the education, outreach and communication issues outlined in the Framework document?
The results of the project will be published in the scientific editions and can be utilised in the educational purposes. For the expeditional works, for study of laboratory method will be involved the students of geologic faculties from Institutes and University and post-graduate students.
What are the initial plans of the project to address data management issues (as outlined in the Framework document?
The published results of the project will be integrated in international banks of the data as agreed with countries by the coauthors. The results of researches will be accessible within the framework of the program PANGAEA.
How is it proposed to fund the project?
The project is financed from budget means of organizations participating in activities, at the expense of the grants RFFI and international grants.
Is there additional information you wish to provide?
None
