Strategies of Social and Professional Mobility of Northern Peoples (SSPM (Strategies of Social and Professional Mobility))
Outline
Project SSPM is conceived as the analysis of change of the social and professional status of northern peoples for last years. The urgency of the chosen theme is defined by necessity of studying of existing opportunities for the population of the Arctic areas in realization of vertical social and professional mobility. The overall objective of the project is to analysis the strategies of social and professional mobility of northern peoples in modern conditions. The goals are: • To analyze theoretical and methodological bases of research of social and professional mobility; • To reveal the objective and subjective factors influencing social and professional mobility of the population of the Arctic areas; • To study changes in working careers of the population of the Arctic areas (occupation, the status, a social status, role functions); • To reveal strategies of behavior of youth of the Arctic areas on a modern labor market; • To estimate a measure correlation between social-professional mobility and both nationality, social origin, education; • To find out a degree of inheritance of social roles the population of the Arctic areas; • To measure a social distance of northern peoples with other ethnic groups; • To analyze intensity and an orientation intergenerational mobility of the population in educational and professional sphere. The basic methods of research: the analysis of documents, sociological interrogation, a method of structural shifts, a retrospective-biographic method, gender and cohort the analysis, and also other methods of statistical data processing and their analysis.

Theme 2: • Revealing of changes in social - professional strategy of behaviour of northern peoples; • The analysis of influence of external factors on the Arctic communities; Theme 6: • The data on character of social - professional mobility of northern peoples; • Parameters of intensity and orientation intergenerational mobility; • Social distance of northern peoples with other ethnic groups.

The project assumes the international cooperation with scientists of Russia, USA, Canada, Norway in the field of problems of social development of peoples of Arctic regions.

The basic charges under the project are assumed on gathering of the sociological information, travel cards and travelling and living expenses, and also charges on creation of a database and statistical processing of the received data.

Is the project a short-term expansion (over the IPY 2007-2008 timeframe) of an existing plan, programme or initiative or is it a new autonomous proposal?
Yes
The offered project is the new independent offer, but may become a part more large-scale social to researches.
How will the project be organised and managed?
It is supposed, that the office of the project will be in Institute of Social Problems of Labor, Sakha Republic Academy of Sciences (Yakutsk, Russia). It is planned, that the project will be coordinated by National Committee.
What are the initial plans of the project for addressing the education, outreach and communication issues outlined in the Framework document?
Students, post-graduate students, young scientists and experts will be involved in sociological research under the project. During realization of the project cooperation with establishments of higher education (Sakha State University, Arctic State Institute of culture and art) is supposed.
What are the initial plans of the project to address data management issues (as outlined in the Framework document?
The information collected during the project will be submitted as the scientific report.
How is it proposed to fund the project?
It is supposed, that financing will be carried out basically through national Russian committee IPY, and also, in part, by the Russian scientific funds.
