PROPOSAL INFORMATION(ID No: 1100)
Studyng of the dynamics of the Sheclton’s shelf glacier (East Antarctic) with the use of GIS technology. (SDSSGUGT)
Outline
The Purpose of the project: study the dynamics of the Sheclton’s shelf glacier and develop possible ways of its evolution under different changes of the natural conditions on the base of GIS-technology. Objectives: 1. Study the main factors of the natural ambience, influencing the dynamics of the coast zone; 2. Define to velocities of the approach (retreats) epidemic deathes on different area shelf glacier; 3. Conduct reconstruction of the coast zone of the Sheclton’s shelf glacier for different years of XX age; 4. Develop the prognosis to models (the ways) of the development of the processes in system "sea-coast" key area the Sheclton’s shelf glacier. Region of the study is chose not accidentally. The Sheclton’s shelf glacier is located on east seaside Antarctic and is washed water of the Indian ocean. Track record of the coast zone Antarctic is better studied for west her part: shelf glaciers of Ueddell sea, shelf glaciers Ross. Together with that, on the strength of history mastering East Antarctic part of mainland is studied less. East Antarctic borders with Ocean and She has not of seas and bays. In this connection track record shelf glacier in this part Antarctic must greatly differ from similar formation in her west part. The Sheclton’s shelf glacier is choses on several reasons: a) near by him is located the russian antarctic station – Mirniy; b) from respect to known english arctic researcher Sir Ernst Sheclton. Plan of the scientific studies: 1. Collection literary and stock material on subject of the study. Estimation modern conditions of the territory; 2. Expeditionary work: creation new account platform, field observations, geodetic work, selection sample sorts; 3. Comparison of the topographical maps for different years; 4. Study aerophotographs and cosmophotographs of separate areas of the Sheclton’s shelf glacier and whole the shelf glacier by means of GIS-program ErDas8.5; 5. Development map velocities of the change the coast zone of the Sheclton’s shelf glacier and calculation of trend developments. Methods: 1. Relatively-geographical; 2. Geodetic; 3. Physico-chemical analysis samples; 4. Cartographic; 5. Study aerophotographs and cosmophotographs; 6. Methods to interpolations and analogy.

What significant advance(s) in relation to the IPY themes and targets can be anticipated from this project?
1. The main factors of the natural ambience, influencing the formation of the Antarctic, seacoast will be evaluated; 2. The parameters of the dynamics of the Sheclton’s shelf glacier and statisticaly reliable trend will be found; 3. Scientifically proved probable ways of the evolution of the main parts of the Sheclton’s shelf glacier will be designed.
What international collaboration is involved in this project?
Russian antarctic expedition.
FIELD ACTIVITY DETAILS
Geographical location(s) for the proposed field activities:
The Sheclton’s shelf glacier, Russian antarctic station “Mirniy”.
Approximate timeframe(s) for proposed field activities:
Arctic: n/a
Antarctic: 02/2007 – 05/2007
Significant facilities will be required for this project:
Money on moving the Antarctic (Moscow-Mirniy-Moscow), money on aquisition of the necessary scientific equipment. Yes, money can be spent on for the other projects.
Will the project leave a legacy of infrastructure?
Yes. New account platforms will be created: their coordinates will be determined, topographical maps will be designed.
How is it envisaged that the required logistic support will be secured?
Consortium
Own national polar operator
National agency
No
Has the project been "endorsed" at a national or international level?
No
PROJECT MANAGEMENT AND STRUCTURE
Is the project a short-term expansion (over the IPY 2007-2008 timeframe) of an existing plan, programme or initiative or is it a new autonomous proposal?
Yes
This is a new project. Perhaps, it will coincide with the objectives of the Russian antarctic subroutine (Section 3: Paleoklimat).
How will the project be organised and managed?
The organization and governing of the project will be realized by Earth Cryosphere Institute (Tyumen) and personally by the author of the project.
What are the initial plans of the project for addressing the education, outreach and communication issues outlined in the Framework document?
Publications in scientifically-popular publishing; appearances with cycle lecture in a row of universities in Western Siberia.
What are the initial plans of the project to address data management issues (as outlined in the Framework document?
Recieved data will be processed on cluster type. Processed data will be given partner's organization. It is planned conduct exchange data.
How is it proposed to fund the project?
Reception of the part of financien from budget of Earth Cryosphere Institute, support of the fund and attraction of the private sources of the financing.
Is there additional information you wish to provide?
Search for scientific partner with close scientific interest. Search for possibility to be included in international and national expeditions in Antarctic.
