PROPOSAL INFORMATION

(ID No: 1151)

Analysis of the transformation of large-scale atmospheric circulation of the troposphere in the Southern hemisphere in consequence of the climate warming impact for development of the physical-statistical methods of weather at Antarctic Peninsula.

Outline
The estimation of the climatic variability of the region of Antarctic Peninsula is carried out taking into account regional warming. Changes in large-scale tropospheric circulation in the Southern hemisphere are studied on different temporal and spatial scales and changes in glaciation by patterns of the synoptically situation. The particular attention is paid to the formation of meteorological anomalies whose number is increased during the recent time. Obtained results allow to : understand reform and current state of the climatic regime in consequence of the climate warming impact of the region of Antarctic Peninsula, develop methods of the forecast of weather conditions of the region of Antarctic Peninsula as well as for practical needs of Ukrainian Antarctic expedition, creation of the weather forecasts’ centre on the basis of Vernadsky station.

Theme(s)   Major Target
The current state of the polar environment
Change in the polar regions
  Natural or social sciences research

What significant advance(s) in relation to the IPY themes and targets can be anticipated from this project?
The scientific conclusions received as a result of performance of the project, can be used for improvement of system of knowledge of tendencies and the forecast of the general and regional climate of Antarctic Region and a planet as a whole, changes in an environment, an icing and a circumpolar whirlwind which forms an ozone gap. The results received during performance of the project, can be used at formation of the state program of hydrometeorological researches in Antarctic Region, in scientific and practical activities of the Ukrainian Antarctic centre, maintenance of the Ukrainian Antarctic expeditions, during realization of oceanic run and seasonal works, the international tourist operations and etc.. Practical and theoretical conclusions can be used for preparation of experts of polar meteorology, for preparation of course, degree projects, dissertations. Possible general researches (both theoretical, and forwarding) with scientists of the Great Britain, Poland, Czech and other countries which will carry out research in Antarctic Region in close directions.

What international collaboration is involved in this project?
Exchange of the scientific researches on atmospheric circulation transformation of Antarctic Peninsula with scientists of the Great Britain, Poland, Czech, South Korea, Russia and other countries which will carry out research in Antarctic Region in close directions. The developed forecasting methods of different earliness will allow Ukrainian Antarctic centre provide international Antarctic expeditions, during holding of ocean runs, international tourist transactions. Exchange of tool data of standard observation on the st. Vernadskiy and other stations of region.

FIELD ACTIVITY DETAILS

Geographical location(s) for the proposed field activities:
Coastal region of the Antarctic Peninsula, nearest to Academik Vernadsky base (64°15’S, 65°16’ E) (Rasmussen region, Hat, Uiggins glacier)

Approximate timeframe(s) for proposed field activities:
Arctic: n/a
Antarctic: 01/2008 – 03/2008      02/2009 – 03/2009

Significant facilities will be required for this project:
New field base will be created; other logistic support includes: Snow and ice equipment, mini-power engine, helicopter (desirable). An opportunity to fulfill research on other sciences also exist, specifically geology, GIS-techniques, biology etc.

Will the project leave a legacy of infrastructure?
The developed methods of forecasting the weather of different earliness will be used by forecasting center of the Antarctic Peninsula on Academik Vernadsky station with participation of the group of the weather forecasting under Ukrainian Antarctic center. The new field base will remain.

How is it envisaged that the required logistic support will be secured?
Own national polar operator
National agency

Has the project been "endorsed" at a national or international level?
National level of endorsement (National Science Antarctic Centre of Ukraine)

PROJECT MANAGEMENT AND STRUCTURE

Is the project a short-term expansion (over the IPY 2007-2008 timeframe) of an existing plan, programme or initiative or is it a new autonomous proposal?
Yes

The Project is a component of an existing and planned activity

How will the project be organised and managed?
General management of the Project is carried out by national Antarctic operator (National Science Antarctic Centre of Ukraine).

What are the initial plans of the project for addressing the education, outreach and communication issues outlined in the Framework document?
Undergraduate and graduate students of Kiev National University and Odessa State Environmental University are expected to be drawn (specifically those are being educated in specialty ‘Polar meteorology’, the only in Ukraine); further education of other specialists in fields of meteorology and glaciology, making contacts with scientists at other polar Universities; presentation of results of research in media.

What are the initial plans of the project to address data management issues (as outlined in the Framework document?
Data management policy corresponds to that presented in documents of IPY Organization Committee.

How is it proposed to fund the project?
This Project is planned to be fund via National Antarctic Science Centre.

Is there additional information you wish to provide?
Field research is planned to be organized at autonomous field base, almost independently on Vernadsky base facilities, that is important to prevent overwhelming people during the IPY activities.
