The ozone layer dynamics and climate changes  (Ozone - Climate)

Outline
The determination of features of long-term changes and dynamics of ozone layer on regional (Antarctic Peninsula) and global (comparison of dynamics Antarctic - Arctic) levels, research of interference of changes in ozone layer and changes of climate. The study of ozone layer is an urgent problem, because the condition of polar stratosphere and its future dynamics is and will be a subject of mankind cares during decades. The project concerns two main themes: 1) dynamics of ozone layer and changes of UV-radiation, 2) ozone and climate changes and its feedback. The project is based on the observational data of satellites TOMS, ENVISAT, Aura, ACE, Odin, POAM III and SAGE III, and also of ground stations, in particular, Vernadsky station. Among last, continuation of qualitative observation, their development due to installation of the new equipment at Vernadsky station (especially, for monitoring UV-radiation) are major for definition of the future condition of stratospheric ozone. Integration of observation and researched processes with modeling of dynamics of ozone layer will give an opportunity to make forecast of evolution of ozone layer in the future, and also its potential influence on the climate of polar regions. The special data bases, suitable for visualization and study of ozone layer dynamics, will be created during the project realization. The project meets one of the main scientific themes of researches of the program ICESTAR, namely, study of processes of interference and interrelation between various layers of atmosphere in the both polar regions, and also their connection with solar activity (for example, influence of extreme events of solar activity on the middle atmosphere circulation and contents of stratospheric ozone).

Theme(s)   Major Target
The current state of the polar environment
Change in the polar regions
Polar-global linkages and teleconnections
The polar regions as vantage points
The human dimension in polar regions
  Natural or social sciences research
Education/Outreach and Communication
Data Management

What significant advance(s) in relation to the IPY themes and targets can be anticipated from this project?
The study of Antarctica impact (shape, position, continent-ice boundary, ice-sea boundary) to ozone distribution in quasi-stationary planetary wave, determination of the different orography and ice-sea boundary forcing in Arctic and Antarctica. Study of the quasi-stationery planetary waves influence to ozone redistribution in polar regions, and UV radiation regional changes due to ozone redistribution, which impact on terrestrial and marine ecosystems. The study of the indicators of anomalous Antarctic stratospheric warming and determination of the ozone depletion level forecast possibilities. Ground based and satellite total ozone observations comparison to improve the quality of data.

What international collaboration is involved in this project?
The project is one of components of the international cluster program ORACLE-O3, and also two projects of the International polar year 2007-2008 ICESTAR/IHY, (Interhemispheric Conjugacy Effects in Solar-Terrestrial and Aeronomy Research) and ClicOPEN (Impact of climate induced glacial melting on marine and terrestrial coastal communities along the Western Antarctic Peninsula).

FIELD ACTIVITY DETAILS

Antarctic: 01/07 – 12/07      01/08 – 12/08      01/09 – 12/09

Significant facilities will be required for this project:
Providing the Dobson spectrophotometer total ozone measurements at Vernadsky Station - one winterer per year, one season scientist once a two years.

Will the project leave a legacy of infrastructure?
Dobson spectrophotometer at Vernadsky Station, twilight spectrometer

How is it envisaged that the required logistic support will be secured?
Own national polar operator
National agency

Has the project been "endorsed" at a national or international level?
The activity under this project has been endorsed in the framework of ORACLE-O3 project, letter of endorsement of 21 August, 2006. (see also http://www.awi-potsdam.de/www-pot/atmo/ORACLE-O3/oracle-o3_information.html)

PROJECT MANAGEMENT AND STRUCTURE

Is the project a short-term expansion (over the IPY 2007-2008 timeframe) of an existing plan, programme or initiative or is it a new autonomous proposal?
Yes

The project is based on experience and results of science team of "Space Physics" Division of National Taras Shevchenko University of Kyiv - participants of the project. The results have been recently published in international peer-reviewed journals and Ukrainian special journals.

How will the project be organised and managed?
The project has the own management and will be part of the planned and existed Programmes, will be coordinated according research in the framework ORACLE-O3 project.

What are the initial plans of the project for addressing the education, outreach and communication issues outlined in the Framework document?
During carrying-out of the project the preparation of two candidate dissertations is provided. Participation of two post-graduate students and one competitor also is provided.

What are the initial plans of the project to address data management issues (as outlined in the Framework document?
The research results according the project will be transferred for joint development and interpretation in the Organizing Committee of ORACLE-O3, International data centres.

How is it proposed to fund the project?
The project will be funded from state budget in the framework on State program of fulfilment of research in Antarctica 2002-2010 and IPY activity.

Is there additional information you wish to provide?
The results of scientific-technical investigations in 2003-2005 show significant changes in ozone layer dynamics, especially the ozone layer planetary wave activity during the last quarter of a century at the 55-75?S latitudes. The spring changes in position of quasi-stationary longitudinal ozone distribution anomaly were uncovered which forced the surface UV radiation redistribution and possibly temperature stratosphere conditions in the different longitudinal sectors.
