PROPOSAL INFORMATION

(ID No: 1174)

Pole of the dreams (Il polo della fantasia) OR North of the curiosity (A nord della curiosita)

Outline
Theatre piéce meant to reach a broad non-specialist audience. It has been submitted to the next Festival della Scienza in Genova, Italy (October 2007). It aims to present and compare the modern scientific approach of learning and the indigenous knowledge about the arctic natural world. It will be stressed that, despite differences are sound, we all share the same objective: understanding nature for our survival. Also, emphasis will be placed on the human inner curiosity about environment and biological life. The story develops as following: a geographer/explorer is forced to winter in the arctic in a shelter with an inuit, round early 1800. They will survive the harsh polar winter. Sharing knowledge they will learn to respect the other's view. And to benefit from it.

PROJECT MANAGEMENT AND STRUCTURE

Is the project a short-term expansion (over the IPY 2007-2008 timeframe) of an existing plan, programme or initiative or is it a new autonomous proposal?
Yes

It is a new autonomous proposal

How will the project be organised and managed?
The submitter is project designer and manager. The project involves two young actors that will be trained and learn their parts. Advice will be given by polar experts from the Museo Polare "Silvio Zavatti", in Italy. The project runs on low budget (but high enthusiasm!).

What are the initial plans of the project for addressing the education, outreach and communication issues outlined in the Framework document?
These include: 1) writing the full story, 2) editing a refining the story with advice from geographers and ethnologists, 3) select the actors, 3) with them, shaping the story in an effective theatre piéce.

What are the initial plans of the project to address data management issues (as outlined in the Framework document?

How is it proposed to fund the project?
I am currently seeking for funding through: private sector (publishers, outdoor equipment, technology sector (ie thuraya satellite mobile phones), travel agencies).

Is there additional information you wish to provide?
Would the event be proved successful, we may aim to translate it into English language to export abroad.
