Yamal Peninsula, The Nenets and climate change (TNCC)
Outline
Because of the IPY high schools the Netherlands will draw attention on (ant) arctic environments and their indigenous people, the effect global warming has on their traditional nomadic pastoralism. Does global warming cause direct treats on seasonal migration patterns on the Yamal peninsula? Does global warming cause structural damage to reindeer herding by the Nenets? A non-scientific trip to obtain photographic-, video- and sound material for educational sources. Educational letters, CD-rom’s, websites following existing educational books of Dutch governmental core targets.

What significant advance(s) in relation to the IPY themes and targets can be anticipated from this project?
Most high school in the Netherlands will somehow draw attention to the International Polar Year. Pupils/students associate of Inuit (Eskimo) when the think of people living up North. Not knowing there are several ethnic groups living up North. Telling Pupils/students what might be the effect of global warming at indigenous people make them make more aware of global warming. Visual support is therefore needed.
What international collaboration is involved in this project?
Maybe our contact with the governor of the Yamal-Nenetsky Peninsula? We have his permission to enter the autonomous region and make contact with local Nenets.
FIELD ACTIVITY DETAILS
Geographical location(s) for the proposed field activities:

Arctic: 15-07-2007 till 20-08-2007

No, we are completely dependent existing facilities, infrastructure and accommodations.
How is it envisaged that the required logistic support will be secured?

Own support
Other sources of support
General public transport to Moscow and Salehard, further with local helicopter operator and by foot.
Has the project been "endorsed" at a national or international level?
No
PROJECT MANAGEMENT AND STRUCTURE
Is the project a short-term expansion (over the IPY 2007-2008 timeframe) of an existing plan, programme or initiative or is it a new autonomous proposal?
No
Component of an existing plan to obtain resources for educational material to draw extra attention to Arctic area’s and their peoples.
How will the project be organised and managed?
Self organised with help and support by the Governor of the Yamalo-Nenetsky Peninsula. He gave us admission to enter this autonomous district and get in touch with the nomadic Nenets. What are the initial plans of the project to address data management issues (as outlined in the Framework document?
Data will be send via Solar charged laptop and Globalstar phone to the website where photographical-, video- and audio material will be available at the current time we are at the location.
How is it proposed to fund the project?
Funded by private gifts, Small funding by Silicium Educatief (web design company) http://www.silicium.nl
Is there additional information you wish to provide?
