PROPOSAL INFORMATION

(ID No: 152)

Body composition and psychological variation of man during the summer and winter in Arctic.  (Nutrition and body composition)

Outline
Nutrition constitutes a vital necessity and eating in an adeguate way represents the fundamental step in order to assure a sound psychological and physical state. On the other hand an inadequate diet in nutrients for an extended period compromise the state of health with rendering reduction and high risk of pathological stress. We would like to study the biophysiological and psychological variation of man during the whole year at Ny Alesund and eventually at Longyearbyen. Evaluation of the nutritional state and eventual variation of the body’s composition in relation to diet and to environmental factor. Besides the evaluation of possible behavioural variations versus food in relation to stress and the absence or the presence of prolonged light.

Theme(s)   Major Target
The human dimension in polar regions
  Natural or social sciences research

What significant advance(s) in relation to the IPY themes and targets can be anticipated from this project?

What international collaboration is involved in this project?

Antarctic: n/a

Significant facilities will be required for this project:

Will the project leave a legacy of infrastructure?

How is it envisaged that the required logistic support will be secured?

Has the project been "endorsed" at a national or international level?

PROJECT MANAGEMENT AND STRUCTURE

Is the project a short-term expansion (over the IPY 2007-2008 timeframe) of an existing plan, programme or initiative or is it a new autonomous proposal?
New

How will the project be organised and managed?
For each people working in Artic, before, during and at the end of working period, a blood, urine and hair sample must be taken to determine: proteins, rhetinol binding protein, glycemia, nitrogen, uricaemia, iron, creatinin, ferritin, transferrin, triglycerides, transaminase, total cholesterol, HDL, LDL, blood test, FT3, FT4, TSH, insulin prolactin and cortisol, urin analysis, azoturia; trace elements in hair. An expert from the Nutrition Unit will be present to obtain data for a minimum of two months consecutivly concerning: a) anthropometric measurements: b) bioclectrical measurement using BIA 101 to determine: distribution of body fluid. All data will be statisticly analyzed.

What are the initial plans of the project for addressing the education, outreach and communication issues outlined in the Framework document?

What are the initial plans of the project to address data management issues (as outlined in the Framework document?

How is it proposed to fund the project?

Is there additional information you wish to provide?
None
