PROPOSAL INFORMATION(ID No: 494)
CANADA #115:Yukon First Nations Public Health Initiative (Yukon First Nations Public Health Initiative)
Outline
While there are several agencies in Canada whose mandate includes aboriginal health, there are far few mechanisms for Yukon First Nations to contribute in a meaningful way to the development of the work of these agencies. This includes the development, implementation and evaluation of strategic plans, of funded northern health research priorities, and of public health related programs, both governmental and research focused, with potential health impact on Yukon Fist Nations. This research initiative will take a comprehensive approach to identifying, developing and evaluating mechanisms for Yukon First Nations (YFN) to play a lead role in improving the health of its members. A comprehensive approach will include: the clarification of an understanding of health as intended by YFN perspectives; consultations with other aboriginal peoples involved in similar research activities in Canada and the circumpolar north; the identification and implementation of mechanisms for the ongoing input of YFN into territorial and federal initiatives relevant to an improved health status of YFN as well as cooperative and collaborative mechanisms between self governing YFN. This research will leave a legacy of meaningful participation and involvement in all aspects of improved health status for Yukon First Nations and other northern aboriginal peoples.
