PROPOSAL INFORMATION

(ID No: 595)

The ozone recovery study on the Antarctic region by balloons at the Antarctic main land  (Upper Atmospheric Research in the Antarctic)

Outline
Using long duration balloon, ozone layer composition will be measured by optical devices. Korea will develop balloons which altitude is 20~30km, payload capability is about 300kg. Ozone recovery rate which is initiated by global activities to reduce ozone destroying gases will be measured.

Theme(s)   Major Target
The current state of the polar environment
Change in the polar regions
  Natural or social sciences research
Data Management

What significant advance(s) in relation to the IPY themes and targets can be anticipated from this project?
Antarctic environmental change can be measured & future changes can be estimated with measured data.

What international collaboration is involved in this project?
No international collaboration is involved yet. If possible, Korean researchers are eager to join collaborative research project using balloons.

FIELD ACTIVITY DETAILS

Geographical location(s) for the proposed field activities:
Korea Antarctic King Sejong station located on 62˚ 13’S, 58˚ 47’W in King George Island. - Antarctic main land (if possible)

Approximate timeframe(s) for proposed field activities:
Arctic: n/a
Antarctic: 11/2008 – 02/2009

Significant facilities will be required for this project:
Existing field stations (main land campaign) and new observatory

Will the project leave a legacy of infrastructure?
This project will be carried out on scientific focus only; gathering data and its management and analysis.

How is it envisaged that the required logistic support will be secured?
Own national polar operator
Another national polar operator
Own support

Has the project been "endorsed" at a national or international level?
KOPRI(Korea Polar Research Institute) and KARI(Korea Aerospace Research Institute) proposed a scientific ballooning project to Korean government. The project is on screening process.

PROJECT MANAGEMENT AND STRUCTURE

Is the project a short-term expansion (over the IPY 2007-2008 timeframe) of an existing plan, programme or initiative or is it a new autonomous proposal?
New

KARI & KOPRI proposed a joint program on investigation of polar region by scientific ballooning. The title of the proposed project is “Korean Scientific Balloon Development & Application Research”. The acronym is KSBA.

How will the project be organised and managed?
KARI will build and operate long duration helium balloon, KOPRI will operate ozone sensor and do the measurement of ozone layer. Existing Korean Antarctic base will be used.

What are the initial plans of the project for addressing the education, outreach and communication issues outlined in the Framework document?
KSBA(Korean Scientific Balloon Development & Application Research) includes many academic labs in korea. With this project, lots of new researchers can join Antarctic researches and visit arctic & Antarctic regions.

What are the initial plans of the project to address data management issues (as outlined in the Framework document?
Any data collected during the IPY 2007/2008 will be open on the web of KARI and KOPRI.

How is it proposed to fund the project?
Korean government will fund the program. KARI will build and operate long duration helium balloon, KOPRI will operate ozone sensor and do the measurement of ozone layer. No other funding is required.

Is there additional information you wish to provide?
None
