DDS Polar Science Scout – children and youth participating in polar research in IPY (DDS Polar Science Scout)

DDS- The Danish Scout Organization want to run a science information project, as part of its activities in 2007-2008, concerning the research in the polar regions with a special focus on the 3 themes elected by the Danish national Committee: Polar environmental problems, human and society and icecap research.1.The project will cover a preparation period from April 2007 to summer 2007 giving background information and activities to children and youth scouts about arctic research.2. A scientific polar summer camp in Denmark 2007 with a general theme: participating in polar research: local activity (analysis of data and specimen from scientific expeditions) Copying of basic tools and equipment from the Inuit culture, meeting and learning from polar researchers and on-line contacts with ongoing research projects and expeditions in the polar region.3. Parallel scout expeditions to the polar regions4. A child and youth conference on the 3 themes from IPY, based on the work done in preparation period and under summer camp and expeditions.5.A public outreach period from autumn 2007 to 2008, where involved scout organizations communicate results, products and information to the public. Participant will be encouraged to bring the activities to local communities and schools.The project will be done in cooperation with the Scout Organizations in the Arctic region, local communities in the polar region and involved research institutions.The IPY logo will be awarded to all participating scouts to be worn under and after the IPY period.
What significant advance(s) in relation to the IPY themes and targets can be anticipated from this project?
Public outreach and education, information to children and youth on polar problems and research. I is expected that participating scouts will bring the IPY message and information to their schools, families and local community.

Transportation for selected groups of scouts to run expeditions in the arctic area (Greenland or arctic areas in Europe/USA/Canada)

A possibility for a permanent cooperation between scout organisations in the polar region and Denmark

PROJECT MANAGEMENT AND STRUCTURE
Is the project a short-term expansion (over the IPY 2007-2008 timeframe) of an existing plan, programme or initiative or is it a new autonomous proposal?
YES
The project is a new proposal, but will consist of a summer camp already planned in the summer 2007 in Denmark (Theme not fixed yet)
How will the project be organised and managed?
Organised by a project manager and through the scout organization at local levels
What are the initial plans of the project for addressing the education, outreach and communication issues outlined in the Framework document?
The programme is based on participation in IPY activities, and basicly concerned about education to Children and youth in a non-profit, apolitical and non-religious scout organisation DDS. It is expected that the Scouts, as based in their traditions, will advocate and inform local communities and educational institutions.The DDS scout organisation is used to participate in discussion of environmental and societal problems intern and externally in the community.
What are the initial plans of the project to address data management issues (as outlined in the Framework document?
Data obtained by the scout expeditions and work done by local groups will be published to the public.
