PROPOSAL INFORMATION(ID No: 770)
Inter-Ocean Exchange (Inter-Ocean Exchange)
Outline
Using Shirshov Institute of Oceanology R/V Akademik Ioffe and Akademik Sergey Vavilov to carry out annually CTD/LADCP lines along SR1 and SR2 sections from the surface to bottom as well as up to 40 repeated XBT lines during austral summer in Drake Passage. This data set provides the opportunity to examine a few main goals:(1) to calculate an interannual variability of the baroclinic transport of Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC); (2) to estimate an interannual variability of the main ACC fronts; (3) to investigate warm-core rings and cyclones of the main ACC and Agulhas Currents as the primary means of meridional transport in the Southern Ocean; (4) to investigate formation and interannual variability of Antarctic Intermediate Water (AAIW); (5) to calculate an ocean-atmosphere interaction in the Southern Ocean; (6) to estimate CO2 balance in the Southern Ocean.
What significant advance(s) in relation to the IPY themes and targets can be anticipated from this project?
To understand the role of the Southern Ocean in the Earth climate changes due to the ACC interannual variability and meridional heat and mass transport as well as its role in CO2 absorption for green-gas effect diminution.
What international collaboration is involved in this project?
Collaboration with IFREMER (France), AWI (Germany), Institute of Marine Research (Spain), Universities of Cape Town and Rhode (South Africa) was established.
FIELD ACTIVITY DETAILS
Geographical location(s) for the proposed field activities:
Sections in Drake Passage between 59-66º W, including SR1 line, and SR2 line between Africa and Antarctica (0-17º E).
Approximate timeframe(s) for proposed field activities:
Arctic: n/a
Antarctic: 10/05-04/06 10/06-04/07 10/06-04/08
Significant facilities will be required for this project:
Two research vessels of Shirshov Institute of Oceanology, Russian Academy of Science Akademik Ioffe and Akademik Sergey Vavilov are going to be used, which operate each year in Antarctica. It is possible to share their activity with other projects.
Will the project leave a legacy of infrastructure?
This project will provide the ship time for these ships.
How is it envisaged that the required logistic support will be secured?
Has the project been "endorsed" at a national or international level?
YES - Now, this project is a part of the international GOODHOPE project that was approved by CLIVAR Panel in September 2003. INTEROCEAN EXCHANGE is an important part of the Russian multidisciplinary project MERIDIAN Plus.
PROJECT MANAGEMENT AND STRUCTURE
Is the project a short-term expansion (over the IPY 2007-2008 timeframe) of an existing plan, programme or initiative or is it a new autonomous proposal?
YES
This project started in 2003 and continued in 2004, when A17, SR1 and SR2 WOCE-CLIVAR lines were carried out as a part of the Russian multidisciplinary MERIDIAN Plus project at the national level and as a part of the GOODHOPE project at the international level. INTEROCEAN EXCHANGE was planning in a close cooperation with ASTTEX (USA), WECCON (Germany), FLOSTRAL (France) projects.
How will the project be organised and managed?
INTEROCEAN EXCHANEGE is going to be organised and managed by Shirshov Institute of Oceanology in coordination with the PI of other international projects (GOODHOPE, ASTTEX, WECCON, FLOSTRAL).
What are the initial plans of the project for addressing the education, outreach and communication issues outlined in the Framework document?
The main results of the project will be presented in our reports and published in oceanographic literature in the collaboration with other international participants. The results can be also used for educational purposes as new knowledge for the ACC structure and variability. Young scientists are going to participate in data processing and analysis.
What are the initial plans of the project to address data management issues (as outlined in the Framework document?
All data of the project, being processed and published, will be available for the whole oceanographic community through the international data archives.
How is it proposed to fund the project?
The project is going to be funded by Russian Ministry of Economy as a part of the multidisciplinary MERIDIAN Plus project in 2003-2008.
Is there additional information you wish to provide?
None
