PROPOSAL INFORMATION(ID No: 797)
Studies of the parameters of solar radiation, trace gases, and aerosol in the Antarctic atmosphere (Studies of the parameters of solar radiation, trace gases, and aerosol in the Antarctic atmosphere)
Outline
1.Investigation of space-time variability of trace gases and aerosol in the Antarctic atmosphere 2.Investigation of inter- and intra-annual cycles of CO2 and CH4 over the World ocean and in the Antarctic 3.Creation of digitized archive of solar radiation and sun photometer data at the Russian Antarctic stations

What significant advance(s) in relation to the IPY themes and targets can be anticipated from this project?
Improving knowledge on the origin, transport pathways, vertical structure, chemical- physical-optical properties seasonal and inter-annual variation of aerosols and trace gases in the Antarctic atmosphere.Determining the AOD background values in both polar regions, such threshold values being suitable for evaluating the width of future changes.Creating a data archive for spectrophotometric, solar radiation measurements and aerosol related parameters at the Russian Antarctic stations.
What international collaboration is involved in this project?
In the frame of international collaboration of Russian Antarctic Expedition (RAE)
FIELD ACTIVITY DETAILS
Geographical location(s) for the proposed field activities:
Ship observations during the routs St-Petersburg-Antarctic- St-PetersburgMirny and Novolasarevskaya stations in the Antarctic
Approximate timeframe(s) for proposed field activities:
Arctic: n/a
Antarctic: TBC
Significant facilities will be required for this project:
Routine shipment of the personal and devices and instruments to the Antarctic as a part of logistic operations of RAE
Will the project leave a legacy of infrastructure?
No
How is it envisaged that the required logistic support will be secured?
Own national polar operator
Another national polar operator
National agency
Has the project been "endorsed" at a national or international level?
In the frame of regular activity of RAE
PROJECT MANAGEMENT AND STRUCTURE
Is the project a short-term expansion (over the IPY 2007-2008 timeframe) of an existing plan, programme or initiative or is it a new autonomous proposal?
One of the part of scientific projects of Roshydromet in the Antarctic, partly new
How will the project be organised and managed?
In the frame of the activity of RAE
What are the initial plans of the project for addressing the education, outreach and communication issues outlined in the Framework document?
What are the initial plans of the project to address data management issues (as outlined in the Framework document?
How is it proposed to fund the project?
In the frame of scientific projects of Roshydromet in the Antarctic
Is there additional information you wish to provide?
None
