PROPOSAL INFORMATION

(ID No: 943)

Profiling of geoelectric section of the bed of Arctic Ocean according to data of magnetovariational observations at drifting North Pole stations  (Geoelectric section)

Outline
In practice of geomagnetic methods of studying the structure of the Earth’s crust the method of magnetovariational profiling has been successfully used for a long time. The inductive vectors calculated through three orthogonal components of magnetic field variations within definite spectral ranges allow localizing inhomogeneities of geoelectric section and determining their geometric parameters. Long-term observations of geomagnetic variations in Arctic Ocean at drifting North Pole stations allow using these data for investigations of geoelectric section on the directions of drift. These directions cross practically all tectonic ocean structures from Bering Strait to Greenland. The archive data include the magnetograms obtained at North Pole stations as 35 mm film of field magnetovariational stations. It is necessary to systematize the analogous records of these magnetograms in a catalogue, digitize them and create a database. Digitized arrays of data will be used in further works.

Other Targets

What significant advance(s) in relation to the IPY themes and targets can be anticipated from this project?
·Carrying out the spectral analysis and calculation of inductive vectors in definite ranges of spectral variations. ·Use of spatial distributions of vectors for construction of maps of isolines of vector modules required for the solving of profiling problems. ·There can be found unknown inhomogeneities, which are of fundamental importance for substantiation of geological, tectonic and other models of the structure of the Arctic Ocean. These models can be associated with forecast of mineral deposit under the ocean bed

What international collaboration is involved in this project?
Joint researches with scientific institutions in USA and Canada according to coordinated scientific projects and programs.

FIELD ACTIVITY DETAILS

Geographical location(s) for the proposed field activities:
The archive materials cover the period of drifting of scientific-research North Pole stations in central parts of arctic basin.

Approximate timeframe(s) for proposed field activities:
Arctic: n/a
Antarctic: n/a

Significant facilities will be required for this project:

Will the project leave a legacy of infrastructure?

How is it envisaged that the required logistic support will be secured?

At the expense of internal funds of institutions-participants.

Has the project been "endorsed" at a national or international level?
Russian Academy of Sciences - Yes Ministry of Education and Science of Russian Federation - Yes Organizing Committee on the participation of Russian Federation in preparing and holding of arrangements within the limits of IPY-2007–2008 - is expected

PROJECT MANAGEMENT AND STRUCTURE

Is the project a short-term expansion (over the IPY 2007-2008 timeframe) of an existing plan, programme or initiative or is it a new autonomous proposal?
Yes

The project suggests to be realized within the frameworks of the programs of scientific-research works of the Department of Sciences of the Earth; it will essentially complete (in the part of obtaining new experimental data) available information of the mineral deposit under the ocean bed.

How will the project be organised and managed?
The working will be organized by the Institute of Physics of Earth.

What are the initial plans of the project for addressing the education, outreach and communication issues outlined in the Framework document?
The results of the project will be presented in reports and publications, and they could be used for educational purposes for popularization of newest conceptions of the physical processes in near-Earth space.

What are the initial plans of the project to address data management issues (as outlined in the Framework document?
The obtained data after their processing and publication of main results can be integrated in International data banks in agreement with countries (institutions) carried out the similar investigations at high latitudes

How is it proposed to fund the project?
The project will be financed at the expense of budgetary funds as well as funds of other financial sources

Is there additional information you wish to provide?
None
