PROPOSAL INFORMATION

(ID No: 995)

Late Pliocene - Pleistocene glaciations in the Barents and Kara Sea region

Outline
The main objective is to model the isostatic response of Cenozoic glaciations, sedimentation and erosion on the Norwegian continental shelf, and to constrain consequences for petroleum systems. This objective will be met by the following sub-goals, providing crucial input to the modelling: •More complete knowledge on timing and extent of glaciations through the Plio-Pleistocene. •Improved understanding and quantification of glacial depositional and erosional processes. •Expanded knowledge on the interaction between the Fennoscandian, the Barents Sea, and Kara Sea ice sheets and their crustal influence through the last glacial cycle. •Linkage between sea level changes and crustal response •Development of precipitation patterns in the Middle Weichselian based on sedimentary records

Theme(s)   Major Target
Change in the polar regions
Polar-global linkages and teleconnections
Exploring new frontiers
  Natural or social sciences research
Education/Outreach and Communication

What significant advance(s) in relation to the IPY themes and targets can be anticipated from this project?
-For the first time, develop glaciation history for the entire Late Pliocene – Pleistocene. -Model influence of glaciations and erosion/uplift on petroleum systems -Investigate global forcing factors for glaciations. -Develop new climate (precipitation) proxy

What international collaboration is involved in this project?
This is part of the APEX initiative. The closest collaborators are from this group and: *Dr. Igor Demidov, Russian Academy of Sciences, Petrozavodsk, Russia. * Dr. Andrew V. Zayonchek, Geol. Inst. Russ. Ac. Sciences, St. Petersburg, Russia * Dr. Slawek Tulaczyk, University of Santa Cruz, CA, USA *Dr. Kurt H. Arctic: 07/06 – 08/06
Antarctic: n/a

Significant facilities will be required for this project:
Terrestrial field work: Logistic support through Russian partners Cruises: university of Tromsø research vessel

Will the project leave a legacy of infrastructure?
No

How is it envisaged that the required logistic support will be secured?
Own national polar operator
National agency
Own support

Has the project been "endorsed" at a national or international level?
Yes - -Funded through Norwegian Research Council and Hydro oil: 2005-2009 Co-funding applied for through NSF, USA

PROJECT MANAGEMENT AND STRUCTURE

Is the project a short-term expansion (over the IPY 2007-2008 timeframe) of an existing plan, programme or initiative or is it a new autonomous proposal?
Yes

This is a new project that will be integrated within the APEX initiative

How will the project be organised and managed?
The project will be coordinated from the Geological Survey of Norway (NGU) with professor Eiliv Larsen as leader. He is supported by a steering committee consisting of representatives from the partners and a scientific secretary. The project is part of the APEX initiative

What are the initial plans of the project for addressing the education, outreach and communication issues outlined in the Framework document?
-The project has 2 post.doc. and 2 PhD positions that will be filled in 2005 – 2006. -Approximately 10 scientific papers are planned already in 2006.

What are the initial plans of the project to address data management issues (as outlined in the Framework document?
-Data will be incorporated in NGU web based data bases with free public access

How is it proposed to fund the project?
The project is funded (2005-2009) through NFR and Norsk Hydro Additional funds are applied for, NSF, USA

Is there additional information you wish to provide?
None
