PROPOSAL INFORMATION

International Network of Permafrost Observatories  (INPO)

Outline
In territory of Transbaikalia located (northern boundary 59º n.b., southern boundary 49º n.b.) in the Russian Federation examinations on studying a temperature mode of permafrost were earlier carried out and carried out. Transbaikalia is in subarctic region. The design will allow to give the analysis of a past, present and future pergelisol, to extend retrospective and modern global data sets on a thermal state of permafrost rock formation and a stratum of seasonal frost penetration - thawing. In territory of Kodaro-Udokanskaya geostructural band (coordinate 57º с.ш., 118º в.д.) exists more than 100 holes, depth from 10 up to 100 and more meters. In 50-80 years of XX century in them measurings temperatures of mucks were nonregularly carried out. The laboratory general cryology INREC the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Science owns the given information. Since 90th years of XX century in five holes depth from 10 up to 30 meters located on a lateral view from Udokanskiy interstream up to Charskiy trough employees of laboratory not less often of an once in 2-3 years carry out measuring temperatures of rock formation. In the offered design is planed to finish a regularity of measurings of temperatures in the given holes with 4 times one year, during short-period a cycle of changes of a climate (10-11 years), irrespective of the guessed design. The design guesses continuation of thermal observations (depth of borehole C1 - 5 m) behind change of a thermal state of rock formation in a stratum of seasonal oscillations of temperatures on hospital "Shaksha" where the aggradation permafrost mucks is observed. The special attention in the design is inverted on restitution of the hole by depth of 1180-meters (Kodarskiy a mountain ridge) where by results of measuring temperatures in 1984 power permafrost 480 m. sets, and holes by depth of 100 meters in low mountains Transbaikalia (52º n.b., 114º e.l.) with earlier installed capacity permafrost rock formation more than 70 meters. At conducting a field work as the indicator of global action of a climate at cryogenic systems the state of a glacier of "geologist N.Azarovoj" will be surveyed. Earlier studying of a glacier was carried out in 60th years of XX century. Under available data now the glacier actively degrades. In the design use of the data on change of the basic meteorological parameters of a climate - to temperature of air and a precipitation, since the middle XIX centuries and on the present time is supposed. The analysis of the data on change of power permafrost since 1898 г will be executed, results paleoclimatic examinations Charskiy continental Pleistocene - holocene of archive are given. Use of computer technologies will allow to establish existential variability of structure permafrost during Pleistocene - holocene of time in which limits it is scored four cryochron and four thermochron and to give the forecast of its development for XXI century Field operation will include geothermic examinations on effective and restored holes, they will be entered with gathering, machining and interpretation of results. Survey of a glacier of "geologist N.Azarovoj" will be executed. As a result of field examinations will be set morphometrycal parameters and a thermodynamic state of a glacier, unique videoes and photographic materials are received. The information support of the design will be carried out by the Russian mass media.

What significant advance(s) in relation to the IPY themes and targets can be anticipated from this project?
The executed examinations for the first time for southern periphery permafrost will allow to reveal action of natural change of meteorological parameters of a climate on dynamic loudspeaker of structure permafrost during Pleistocene - holocene of age, to establish joint actions of natural and anthropogenous parameters on structure permafrost in XX-XXI centuries.

What international collaboration is involved in this project?
In the project participation of members of International Permafrost Association and programs is planed: GTN-P, INPRO. Except for it in-process on discussion of results of the design foreign participants from China, Japan, the USA will be involved.


FIELD ACTIVITY DETAILS

Geographical location(s) for the proposed field activities:
Field work will be carried out in territory of Central and Northern Transbaikalia: 1) in middle-high mountains fields Kodaro-Udokanskiy geostructural band; 2) In middle mountain territories of Central Transbaikalia - basic geothermic item "Shksha", and in a bottom land r. Chita.

Significant facilities will be required for this project:
Delivery of expedition by a railway transport in region of examinations; delivery of group of employees by helicopter and cross-country transport (to thermometric to items of observation); Maintenance with space pictures; Technical and financial maintenance of repair - regenerative works on the organization of supervision over temperatures of rocks.

Will the project leave a legacy of infrastructure?
Results of geothermic examinations will be switched on in ACIA, databases of observatories TSP/INPRO. The riged geothermic holes will be used for the further international examinations, and also become a part of international network TSP/INPRO.

Has the project been "endorsed" at a national or international level?
The design is switched on in the national Russian program for IPY and surveyed and approved by the Russian and foreign participants on Scientific Advice of a cryosphere of the Earth of the Russian Academy of Science in Puchino and on 3 cross-over of geocryolog´s Russia in Moscow in 2005.


PROJECT MANAGEMENT AND STRUCTURE

Is the project a short-term expansion (over the IPY 2007-2008 timeframe) of an existing plan, programme or initiative or is it a new autonomous proposal?
Yes
The design represents expansion of the program on studying «the Retrospective analysis of action of a climate on dynamic loudspeaker of structure permafrost in Pleistocene - Holocene time in Transbaikalia», includes new problems for international cooperation on studying a thermal state permafrost for IPY, and also for long-term monitoring permafrost in territory of Russia.

How will the project be organised and managed?
Coordination of the design will be carried out by academician V.P.Melnikova (Institute of a cryosphere of the Earth of the Siberian Department of the Russian Academy of Science), and also the President International Permafrost Association Dr. Jerry Brown. Results of the design will be lit on yearly Scientific Advice after a cryosphere of the Earth of the Russian Academy of Science, international conferences in 2006 in China, 2007 г at international conference on engineering permafrostology in Russia. After the first year of operation results of examinations will be presented to the coordinator of the design.

What are the initial plans of the project for addressing the education, outreach and communication issues outlined in the Framework document?
Young scientists, post-graduate students will participate in the design and doctoral studies Institute of natural resources, ecology and cryology the Siberian Department of the Russian Academy of Science, the post-graduate student of the Moscow state university him. M.V. Lomonosov, students of the Chita state university. The riged geothermic items will be used at conducting practical holdings at the students - geocryolog´s, the received results of examinations will be irradiated at seminars and lectures in scientific institutes and universities.

What are the initial plans of the project to address data management issues (as outlined in the Framework document)?
For wide irradiating results of examinations will be disposed on the Internet sites of Advice on cryology the Earth of the Russian Academy of Science, Institute of natural resources, ecology and cryology the Siberian department of the Russian Academy of Science, a series of the data of the field work received at conducting will be archive at national Centre of the Data (NSIDC) and released on compact discs.

How is it proposed to fund the project?
Partial financing of the design will be carried out through programs of basic researches of the Siberian Department of the Russian Academy of Science with a yearly support of field expeditions. q3_6_Addition : The idea of the design is offered by employees of laboratory general of cryology under an administration the deputy director on science INREC the Siberian Department of the Russian Academy of Science, dr., professors Dmitry Shesternyov. The working group of the design is entered by employees of Institute of natural resources, ecologies and cryology the Siberian Department of the Russian Academy of Science (Chita), Institute of Environmental Geoscience Russian Academy of Sciences (Moscow), post-graduate students of the Moscow State University him. M.V. Lomonosov (Moscow) and ChitSU (Chita). Planning of the design will be coordinated with Institute of the Cryosphere of the Earth of the Siberian Department of the Russian Academy of Science, and also with IPA.
