PROPOSAL INFORMATION

(ID No: 1158)

Monitoring of seismoacoustic, geopolariton, geomagnetic, radon emanation fields for earthquakes forecast and investigation of the nature of energetic processes in the Earth nucleus, mantle, and crust.  (Deep structure of polar regions and contemporary astrogeophysical global energy-active and catastrophic processes.)

Outline
The majority of tectonic investigations are limited due to the lack of deep Earth structure data. This is of exceptional importance for investigations of difficult of access regions of West Antarctic Fracture system and arc of Skotia sea, Arctic region, Greenland etc. The models of deep structures and geospheres are crucial for understanding tectonics, deep geodynamics and planning the field works during IPY. The data sources for reconstruction of the inner mantle and core structure are methods of gravimetrical tomography, geopolariton and electroresonance sounding. Astrogeophysical modeling of energy generation in the Earth nucleus, their influence on structure and dynamics of geospheres and anomalous deep structures of Arctic and Antarctic. The prognosis of potential natural catastrophes.

Theme(s)   Major Target
Change in the polar regions
Exploring new frontiers
The polar regions as vantage points
  Natural or social sciences research
Education/Outreach and Communication
Other Targets

What significant advance(s) in relation to the IPY themes and targets can be anticipated from this project?
As a result of the project fulfillment on the basis of complex use of experimental data series on geophysical fields a 3D model of structural and density peculiarities of Earth geospheres including Earth nucleus will be created.

What international collaboration is involved in this project?
The creation of quasi-meridianal network of the first meridian for complex geopolariton monitoring of geodynamical state of Earth astrogeospheres.

FIELD ACTIVITY DETAILS

Geographical location(s) for the proposed field activities:
Shpitzberg island (Arctic), Murmansk (Russia), Kyiv, Crimea, Cacivelli, Koshka mountain, Rostopchina-Shahovskaya, Kharkiv, Artiuhovka, Kamyanetsk-Podilskiy, Ukrainian granite shield, Tierra del Fuego, Ushuaia, seismically-active zone Vrancha (Rumania), Sparta University (Greece), South Africa.

Approximate timeframe(s) for proposed field activities:
Arctic: The whole year 2006-2008
Antarctic: The whole year 2006-2008

Significant facilities will be required for this project:
For deep sounding of Earth interior using methods of geopolariton and electroresonance sounding aviation, naval etc facilities will be used in addition to stationary ground-based sites.

Will the project leave a legacy of infrastructure?
Ground apparatus network of geopolariton geotectonics monitoring will be a quasi-meridional system of devises, located in Antarctica on Vernadsky Station, in Arctic on Shpitzbergen, in equatorial zone and in temperate latitudes.

How is it envisaged that the required logistic support will be secured?
Own national polar operator
National agency
Own support
Other sources of support

Has the project been "endorsed" at a national or international level?
The project is recommended for financing by coordinate committee on preparation and carrying out of activities of the Third International Polar Year in Ukraine.

PROJECT MANAGEMENT AND STRUCTURE

Is the project a short-term expansion (over the IPY 2007-2008 timeframe) of an existing plan, programme or initiative or is it a new autonomous proposal?

This project is a continuation of an existing complex experiment.

How will the project be organised and managed?
Management of project will be carried out from side of National Antarctic Scientific Center of Ministry for Science and Education of Ukraine.

What are the initial plans of the project for addressing the education, outreach and communication issues outlined in the Framework document?
On the basis of the astrogeophysical information obtained during project fulfillment a series of lectures on peculiarities of internal structure of Earth geospheres will be prepared. Publication of a text-book for Universities and Institutes studying geology, geophysics, astrophysics and methods of remote Earth sounding is planned.

What are the initial plans of the project to address data management issues (as outlined in the Framework document)?
The obtained complex experimental data and results of their preliminary and final process will be monthly presented on the web site of National Antarctic Scientific Center of Ukraine.

How is it proposed to fund the project?
Financing of the project will be carried out due to national funds, namely due to funds of the Ministry for Education and a science of Ukraine

Is there additional information you wish to provide?
None
