PROPOSAL INFORMATION

The development and introduction of new nature protecting biotechnologies in Antarctica.  

Outline
Antarctica is reserved continent in which territory dump and a burial of waste products of any origin is forbidden. Waste products which collect within one year are taken out from continent at change of winterers. A significant problem is processing of food waste products, in particular the rests of vegetables and fruit which are not utilized in conditions of Antarctica and cause environmental contamination. We have developed technology which effectively works in extreme conditions of Antarctica and Academician Vernadsky since 2002 provides recycling solid food wastes at station. For fermentation of waste products aborigine Antarctic microorganisms, and for the maximal acceleration of fermentation process - regulators of a microbial metabolism are used. The technology provides weight reduction of waste products at 10-25 times, duration of a technological cycle is about 5-9 days. Products of processing of food waste are safe for an environment in Antarctic Region. The purposes of the project: - Optimization of a construction (plant) for fermentation of solid food wastes with the purpose of increasing efficiency of its work (increase of compactness, increase mass exchanging in the fermenters); - Selection and the further optimization of regulators of a microbial metabolism

What significant advance(s) in relation to the IPY themes and targets can be anticipated from this project?
The project assumes getting of the new actual data about function of purification technologies in extreme conditions of Antarctic Region, optimization of work of technology for maximum effective recycling solid vegetable waste products, decrease of anthropogenic influence in Antarctica in area of research stations, an opportunity of introduction of technologies of utilization of solid food waste products at stations of other countries under condition of individual cooperation of the interested sides.

What international collaboration is involved in this project?
The international cooperation provides work with counties which are interested in functioning of purification technologies at the Antarctic stations, preservations of an environment of Antarctic Region

Granting an opportunity of approbation similar technologies on plant for recycling solid food waste products (on Ukrainian Antarctic station Academic Vernadsky); an exchange of an operational experience on introduction of the purification technologies working in extreme conditions; realization of consultations for experts of other countries in work with purification plant.

PROJECT MANAGEMENT AND STRUCTURE

Is the project a short-term expansion (over the IPY 2007-2008 timeframe) of an existing plan, programme or initiative or is it a new autonomous proposal?
Yes
The project is a part of already existing plan and enters into the program of financing from funds of Ministry of Science and Education of Ukraine in 2006-2007 years (project “Development of new universal industrial technology of processing of ecologically dangerous food waste products”)

How will the project be organised and managed?
Management of project will be carried out from side of National Antarctic Scientific Centre of Ministry of Science and Education of Ukraine in relation to Institute of Microbiology and Virology of National Academy of Science of Ukraine; management at the international level also is supposed on the part of IPY coordinators

What are the initial plans of the project for addressing the education, outreach and communication issues outlined in the Framework document?
The establishment of contacts to the countries to which own stations in Arctic regions and the Antarctic Region, interested in introduction of technologies of processing of solid food waste products at stations. Informing or realizations of a rate of lectures in higher educational institutions of Ukraine or other countries about opportunities of modern nature protection technologies also is possible.

What are the initial plans of the project to address data management issues (as outlined in the Framework document)?
The received data concerning recycling solid food wastes in Antarctica will be brought in uniform of National Antarctic Scientific Centre; the further sending data to ICSU World Data Centers, Joint Committee for Antarctic Data Management, WCRP is also possible

How is it proposed to fund the project?
Financing of the project will be carried out due to national funds, namely due to funds of the Ministry of Education and a science of Ukraine

Researches on the given theme have high practical and scientific value, realization of tasks of the project creates base for development of purification technologies which may function in any extreme places of existence of the human
