PROPOSAL INFORMATION

(ID No: 1178)

The reduction of ice-occurrences in North East Greenland from 1907 to 2007  (Ice-occurrences in North East Greenland)

Outline
To improve our understanding of the polar Region I will participate in the expedition to North East Greenland in the 100 year jubilee for the Danish Expedition 1906-08. My grandfather Johan Peter Koch was the glacial expert in the Danish Expedition and has described the ice-occurrences in the cost areas in North East Greenland. My goal is to describe and make videos of the situation today and do some comparisons to the situation in 1906-08. This material can be used to communicating the polar year.

Theme(s)   Major Target
The current state of the polar environment
Change in the polar regions
  Natural or social sciences research
Education/Outreach and Communication
Other Targets

What significant advance(s) in relation to the IPY themes and targets can be anticipated from this project?
There is a relation between the global heating and the ice-occurrences. To describe this relation it is important to have some descriptions and pictures from the Polar Region today. The expedition is sailing from Iceland to Scoresbysund in Greenland and further along the cost to north east point of Greenland as long as the ice permit. From here to Svalbard across the route of icebergs. The total route will give a good picture of the ice situation and a possibility to describe the ice development by comparisons with the situation 100 year ago.

What international collaboration is involved in this project?

FIELD ACTIVITY DETAILS

Geographical location(s) for the proposed field activities:
The expedition is sailing from Iceland to Scoresbysund in Greenland and further along the cost to north east point of Greenland as long as the ice permit. From here to Svalbard across the route of icebergs.

Approximate timeframe(s) for proposed field activities:
Arctic: 09/07 -10/07
Antarctic: n/a

Significant facilities will be required for this project:
Transport cost 5.000 Euro Videoequipment 1.000 Euro Ice strengthened research ship is used

Will the project leave a legacy of infrastructure?
No

How is it envisaged that the required logistic support will be secured?
Commercial operator

Has the project been "endorsed" at a national or international level?
No

PROJECT MANAGEMENT AND STRUCTURE

Is the project a short-term expansion (over the IPY 2007-2008 timeframe) of an existing plan, programme or initiative or is it a new autonomous proposal?

How will the project be organised and managed?
The transport operator is Albatros travel in collaboration with Odder museum. The rest of the project is self-managed

What are the initial plans of the project for addressing the education, outreach and communication issues outlined in the Framework document?
The initial plans is to produce descriptions and videos and still pictures of the ice-situation and make copies to other IPY-projects

What are the initial plans of the project to address data management issues (as outlined in the Framework document)?
The initial plans is that data management can be done by the Odder Museum and the Danish Polar institute

How is it proposed to fund the project?
The project is proposed to be fund by national funding agencies. It will be valuable if you could support me in this process.

Is there additional information you wish to provide?
None
