PROPOSAL INFORMATION

(ID No: 1191)

ARCUS Internet Media Archive  (IMA)

Outline
The ARCUS Internet Media Archive (IMA) is a collection of polar related photos, graphics, videos, and presentations that are shared through the Internet. It provides the arctic and Antarctica research community with a centralized location where images and video pertaining to polar research can be browsed and retrieved for a variety of uses. The IMA currently contains almost 5,000 publicly accessible photos, along with 360 video files, 260 audio files, and approximately 8,000 additional resources that are being prepared for public access. The contents of this archive are organized by file type, photographer's name, event, or by organization, with each photo or file accompanied by information on content, contributor source, and usage requirements. All the files are keyworded and all information, including file name and description, is completely searchable.

Theme(s)   Major Target
The current state of the polar environment
Change in the polar regions
Polar-global linkages and teleconnections
Exploring new frontiers
The polar regions as vantage points
The human dimension in polar regions
  Education/Outreach and Communication
Legacy

What significant advance(s) in relation to the IPY themes and targets can be anticipated from this project?
The IMA will support IPY themes and targets by providing a resource for public education and outreach and providing a convenient location for those involved in IPY activities to share the media resources generated from their efforts with each other and the public at large.

What international collaboration is involved in this project?
We will work with the IPY Programme Office, the EOC Subcommittee and other international education networks to leverage the IMA for international audiences.

FIELD ACTIVITY DETAILS

Geographical location(s) for the proposed field activities:
No proposed fieldwork, but media resources available encompass both polar regions.

Approximate timeframe(s) for proposed field activities:
Arctic: n/a
Antarctic: n/a

Significant facilities will be required for this project:
The IMA is supported by, the Arctic Research Consortium of the US (ARCUS) in Fairbanks, Alaska. No addition facilities or logistics are needed.

Will the project leave a legacy of infrastructure?
The IMA will leave a legacy in that it provides the arctic and Antarctica research community as well as the general public with a centralized location where images, video and other media resources pertaining to polar research can be browsed and retrieved for a variety of uses.

How is it envisaged that the required logistic support will be secured?
Own national polar operator
National agency

The IMA is currently funded and all logistics are secured.

Has the project been "endorsed" at a national or international level?
The US has no endorsement process other than merit review through the National Science Foundation. The IMA is funded through the Arctic Research Consortium of the US (ARCUS) Cooperative Agreement, which is intern is funded by the National Science Foundation ( NSF).

PROJECT MANAGEMENT AND STRUCTURE

Is the project a short-term expansion (over the IPY 2007-2008 timeframe) of an existing plan, programme or initiative or is it a new autonomous proposal?

The IMA is a funded project managed by ARCUS and was made publicly available in early 2006 and will continue to improve and expand with the addition of the various media resources gathered during the IPY and beyond.

How will the project be organised and managed?
IMA is managed by the Arctic Research Consortium of the US (ARCUS) with funding provided by the National Science Foundation (NSF).

What are the initial plans of the project for addressing the education, outreach and communication issues outlined in the Framework document?
IMA addresses the EOC issues by providing the arctic research community and the public at large with a centralized location where images, video, and other media resources pertaining to polar research can be browsed and retrieved for a variety of uses.

What are the initial plans of the project to address data management issues (as outlined in the Framework document)?
Data management is not relevant to this project.

How is it proposed to fund the project?
The IMA is funded through the Arctic Research Consortium of the US (ARCUS) Cooperative Agreement, which is intern funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF).

Is there additional information you wish to provide?
ARCUS plans to continue to improve and expand the IMA with a particular focus on providing graphics depicting key arctic and Antarctica research results and findings as well as edited video archives of relevant scientific community meetings.
