PROPOSAL INFORMATION

(ID No: 1194)

Mosaic of Antarctica, ice and glass maps. An audio visual Installation capturing the unique qualities and atmosphere of the Antarctic.  (Mosaic of Antarctica)

Outline
Mosaic of Antarctica will be fabricated from a collaboration with scientists during fieldwork involved in the investigation of the shifting currents and movement of ice along ice sheets. Via a series of sound walks I will investigate and harness different rhthyms of sound evolving from the ice during these expeditions. Building up a particular atmospheric portfolio of location recordings using 5.1 surround sound this work will be used to compliment the visual linear ice maps showing where we had walked. The explored areas will be transcripted from the new satellite data imagery Mosaic of Antarctica onto ice-sheets. The amazing linear imagery will be carved into the ice and contructed to create textural sculptural drawings. These will form an audio visual installation which will be exhibited both internally and externally at four science centres in Scotland and the North East of England as part of IPY. The sheets of ice will be suspended interspresed with sheets of glass which will have details of the ice maps etched onto the surface. They will show the current and flow of the ice and the subtle variations, enhanced with a 3 dimensional sound field linked to ambient lighting depicting the varying tonal intensities of ice. The ice maps will help to highlight the dangers and impact of global warming in a gallery setting presenting clues as to how and why Antarctica's ice sheets and glaciers are changing. It will also illuminate this incredible data enabling scientists to create the most accurate detailed maps of Antarctica thus advancing research into this terrain.

Theme(s)   Major Target
The current state of the polar environment
Change in the polar regions
Polar-global linkages and teleconnections
  Natural or social sciences research
Education/Outreach and Communication
Data Management
Legacy

What significant advance(s) in relation to the IPY themes and targets can be anticipated from this project?
This project will allow the general public to view an accurate artistic transcription of detailed scientific satellite data showing the changing movements of ice flow along some of the ice sheets and glaciers in Antarctica. Education. This will be brought to the general public via the touring exhibition in four major science centres, one of them, Edinburgh's Dynamic Earth is particularly devoted to familiarising the general public with the natural world and the environmental changes occurring. They have a section dedicated to the polar regions with recreated ice burgh. A series of hands on workshops to accompany the exhibition.

What international collaboration is involved in this project?
UK, (BAS), USA, Germany

FIELD ACTIVITY DETAILS

Geographical location(s) for the proposed field activities:
Rothera, Halley VI, Fossil Bluff

Approximate timeframe(s) for proposed field activities:
Arctic: n/a
Antarctic: 12/07 - 02/07

Significant facilities will be required for this project:
Existing field stations. Snow terrain vehicles, fixed wing transport aircraft, satellites. I will be looking to share these resources from other projects.

Will the project leave a legacy of infrastructure?
The permanent glass maps will be accurate sculptural drawing documenting areas explored in the Antarctic commemorating work undertaken in IPY.

How is it envisaged that the required logistic support will be secured?
Consortium
Own national polar operator
Own support
Other sources of support

Has the project been "endorsed" at a national or international level?
Yes

PROJECT MANAGEMENT AND STRUCTURE

Is the project a short-term expansion (over the IPY 2007-2008 timeframe) of an existing plan, programme or initiative or is it a new autonomous proposal?
Yes
Using existing resources.

How will the project be organised and managed?
I will be director and manager of the project and will work with the relevant organisations and individuals as appropriate.

What are the initial plans of the project for addressing the education, outreach and communication issues outlined in the Framework document?
Touring exhibition in 4 science centres in Scotland and N E England. From these venues, a series of workshops to accompany the exhibition. A website showing development of my work in the Antarctic and the UK. A blog diary illustrating daily life in this environment. A radio diary in the form of an artistic/scientific documentary about sound and visual representation material gathered during the

What are the initial plans of the project to address data management issues (as outlined in the Framework document)?

How is it proposed to fund the project?
Scottish Arts Council. BAS Writers and Artists Programme. Gulbenkian Foundation, Science and Arts Grant.

Is there additional information you wish to provide?
If application to the Artists and Writers Programme through BAS is not successful I will paply to the American Programme. I am also applying to Quark expeditions as artist in residence.
