PROPOSAL INFORMATION

(ID No: 1197)

BOOK PROJECT ABOUT THE ANTARCTIC  (ANTARCTIQUE: LE COEUR BLANC DE LA TERRE)

Outline
This book of photographs (dimensions: 28 cm x 32 cm - 224 pages ) is entirely focused on the ANTARCTIC. The first 190 pages are divided into four main chapters: 1) The Continent 2) Exploration (history) 3) Life on the continent 4) A continent of Peace, dedicated to Science These four chapters are illustrated with a selection of pictures taken by photographers (including myself) from many different countries; being a Photo editor as well as a photographer I also made the photo selection, choosing the most spectacular photos I could find (among the photographers: Yann Arthus-Bertrand, Frans Lanting, Norbert Wu, Ingo Arndt, George Steinmetz, Lucia Simion). Many are double page spreads. There are 4 main texts, plus 10 interviews with scientists or technicians from different countries all involved with the Antarctic and 32 pages of “Encyclopedia” at the end of the book (16 double pages). The most important thing for me was that the photographers and those interviewed should belong to different countries. This respects the “ethic” of the IPY: collaboration. The book will be published in September 2007. In French and Italian.

Theme(s)   Major Target

  Education/Outreach and Communication

What significant advance(s) in relation to the IPY themes and targets can be anticipated from this project?
The most important goal of this book is to make the general public aware of how vital the Antarctic is to the global climate and to draw attention to its importance as a land of Peace dedicated to Science.

What international collaboration is involved in this project?
Some international projects such as Andrill, IceCube, EPICA and others are featured in the book.

FIELD ACTIVITY DETAILS

Geographical location(s) for the proposed field activities:

Approximate timeframe(s) for proposed field activities:
Arctic: n/a
Antarctic: n/a

Significant facilities will be required for this project:

Will the project leave a legacy of infrastructure?

How is it envisaged that the required logistic support will be secured?

Has the project been "endorsed" at a national or international level?

PROJECT MANAGEMENT AND STRUCTURE

Is the project a short-term expansion (over the IPY 2007-2008 timeframe) of an existing plan, programme or initiative or is it a new autonomous proposal?

How will the project be organised and managed?

What are the initial plans of the project for addressing the education, outreach and communication issues outlined in the Framework document?

What are the initial plans of the project to address data management issues (as outlined in the Framework document)?

How is it proposed to fund the project?
