PROPOSAL INFORMATION

A Ski Traverse of Penny Ice Cap – Baffin Island  

Outline
Expedition Aims: 1) To be the first British expedition to attempt a self-supportive ski traverse of the Penny Ice Cap, Baffin Island. 2) To raise awareness for the International Polar Year 2007-08 by conducting presentations in UK Schools/Colleges promoting the IPY and the effects of climate change with special reference to the Inuit way of life. Talks and presentations will be run in support of the expedition for educational organizations including schools and colleges. 3) To help create further opportunities for young explorers to gain scientific and expedition experience by raising funds and awareness for the British Schools Exploring Society (BSES), and its 75th Anniversary.

The project will help spread awareness through media and internet coverage.

At present this project is a British venture.

FIELD ACTIVITY DETAILS

Geographical location(s) for the proposed field activities:
This expedition will take place on Baffin Island. The Penny Ice Cap on Baffin Island in Auyuittuq Park is believed by many to be the birthplace of the last ice age. The Penny Ice Cap is huge. It covers over 5,000 square kilometres (2,200 square miles) with ice as thick as 300 meters (1,000 ft) in places. The ice cap provides an excellent record of past climates and has been the base for several major scientific studies into climatic change and global warming.

This expedition shall be a self sufficient trip using local services where needed.

PROJECT MANAGEMENT AND STRUCTURE

Is the project a short-term expansion (over the IPY 2007-2008 timeframe) of an existing plan, programme or initiative or is it a new autonomous proposal?
Yes
This is a new Project and is still, at present in its planning stage.

How will the project be organised and managed?
The team itself consists of 4 members. There is one overall expedition leader, however all members of the team are providing some level of organisation into the planning and running of the trip.
