PROPOSAL INFORMATION(ID No: 1221)
“Vanishing World” – book and exhibitions (VanWorld)
Outline
“Vanishing World” is a book and an open air exhibtion series. "Vanishing World" tells an important story about a world of ice and extreme conditions. A frozen world where global warming leads to fast and dramatic changes. Five years in the making - ”Vanishing World” is an unprecedented visual record of the Arctic, rendering a living image of its nature, wildlife and threatened environment. It is a celebration of life in the harshest and most unforgiving world imaginable and yet the most fragile and beautiful. The book is a "coffee table book" for a wide international market. It is an all Swedish production by photographer Mireille de la Lez and Fredrik Granath, production. Format: 270 pages, 270x325 mm. It will be published in October 2007 in English (Abrams), French (Éditions de La Martinière), German (Knesebeck Verlag) and Italian (Mondadori). In 2008 it will be published in Spanish, Dutch, Portugese, Japanese, Chinese, Russian, Hungarian, Finnish, Norwegian, Danish and Swedish. There will also be an outdoor, open air, exhibition series, starting in October 2007, will tour between New York, London, Paris, Munich and Milan, 3 weeks at each location. Possible locations are for example Central Park in New York, Hyde Park in London and Trocadero at the Eiffel tower in Paris. We are further aiming to have the exhibition move on during 2008 to other locations, including the Nordic capitols, Madrid, Amsterdam, Moscow and Tokyo. A well known international company will sponsor the exhibitions in collaboration with the WWF.

What significant advance(s) in relation to the IPY themes and targets can be anticipated from this project?
"Vanishing World" is a potential bridge for IPY to the attention of the general public. The book and exhibitions will reach millions of people during 2007-08. It is a unique possibility for IPY to spread the word about the important work you and all the fantastic scientists are doing and explaining to the world exactly what the IPY is. Because a majority still do not know.
What international collaboration is involved in this project?
The book is being published in 15 countries. The exhibition will run from October through all of 2008 in approximately 10 countries. WWF International is involved in both the book and exhibitions throughout the world.

PROJECT MANAGEMENT AND STRUCTURE
Is the project a short-term expansion (over the IPY 2007-2008 timeframe) of an existing plan, programme or initiative or is it a new autonomous proposal?
How will the project be organised and managed?
The book is published in each country independently by local publishers. The exhibition series will be organized by Nova Photography & Media in Stockholm. Funding for the exhibitions series will be provided by a corporate sponsor.
What are the initial plans of the project for addressing the education, outreach and communication issues outlined in the Framework document?
The goal is to raise awareness about the Arctic, its nature, wildlife and environment, and the effects of a changing climate.
What are the initial plans of the project to address data management issues (as outlined in the Framework document)?
How is it proposed to fund the project?
Private funding. See above.
Is there additional information you wish to provide?
Please see separate information provided in e-mails to Rhian Salmon, Dave Carlson and Camilla Hansen. As a sidenote, in our work we have a loose and informal collaboration with IPY project 134, BearHealth (re leader Christian Sonne), and many scientists involved in BearHealth, for example Andrew Derocher, University of Alberta and Jon Aars, Norwegian Polar Institute.
