PROPOSAL INFORMATION

(ID No: 1226)

Sensitivity to climate change of the Antarctic silverfish: impact on the Ross Sea ecosystem.  (Silverfish sensitivity)

Outline
The Antarctic silverfish is a key species in the Ross Sea ecosystem. The central hypothesis we address in this proposal explores the relationship between changes in the physical environment likely to arise as a consequence of global warming, and effects on the development and recruitment of silverfish likely to compromise the Ross Sea ecosystem. Our proposal, part of a large multinational research effort, focuses on the vulnerability of the silverfish to changes in seawater temperature, sea ice dynamics and coastal currents, all likely to be affected by global warming. The environmental sensitivity of the silverfish during development suggests that this species could serve as a critical indicator of ecosystem change. It raises major concerns with respect to Ross Sea ecosystem dynamics and the sustainability of the dependent Antarctic toothfish fishery.

Theme(s)   Major Target
Change in the polar regions
  Natural or social sciences research
Education/Outreach and Communication
Data Management

What significant advance(s) in relation to the IPY themes and targets can be anticipated from this project?
The project will provide data on silverfish dynamics in Terra Nova Bay, particularly in relation to the recently identified spawning grounds, that will enable appropriate decisions to be taken at the international level to ensure sustainable management of the Ross Sea ecosystem and the dependent toothfish fishery.

What international collaboration is involved in this project?
Research will be undertaken at Terra Nova Bay and will involve New Zealand, US and Italian participants

FIELD ACTIVITY DETAILS

Geographical location(s) for the proposed field activities:
Terra Nova Bay

Approximate timeframe(s) for proposed field activities:
Arctic: n/a
Antarctic: 10/08 – 12/08      10/09 – 12/09

Significant facilities will be required for this project:
Ice drilling equipment These will be linked in with other research programmes operating from Stazione Mario Zucchelli.

Will the project leave a legacy of infrastructure?
The research will contribute a framework for overseeing the protection and management of silverfish in the Ross Sea ecosystem.

How is it envisaged that the required logistic support will be secured?
Own national polar operator
Another national polar operator

Logistical support will be required from Antarctica NZ and PNRA

Has the project been "endorsed" at a national or international level?
Yes - This proposal has been submitted to FRST for funding according to the guidelines presented by Antarctica NZ.

PROJECT MANAGEMENT AND STRUCTURE

Is the project a short-term expansion (over the IPY 2007-2008 timeframe) of an existing plan, programme or initiative or is it a new autonomous proposal?
Yes
The proposal is a new project built on a well established collaboration with US and Italian colleagues.

How will the project be organised and managed?
The project will be managed logistically through Antarctica NZ, who will liaise with PNRA on our behalf to ensure appropriate research facilities are available. Overall responsibility for meeting the goals of the project lies with the PI, who will ensure appropriate reporting through FRST and targeted end-users/

What are the initial plans of the project for addressing the education, outreach and communication issues outlined in the Framework document?
The project includes two PhD students, and also involves the submission of articles to popular journals, magazines and newspapers as well as radio presentations (including podcasts), and website contributions to keep the general public informed.

What are the initial plans of the project to address data management issues (as outlined in the Framework document)?
Reports, results and data will be submitted to New Zealand and international end users, and through the New Zealand Government (MFAT) to CCAMLR

How is it proposed to fund the project?
A proposal has been submitted to FRST (a NZ Government-based funding agency) for support.

Is there additional information you wish to provide?
None
