PROPOSAL INFORMATION

Educational and promotional partnership between Nomad Press (White River Junction, VT) and IPY.  (Nomad Press Project)

Outline
Nomad Press is an independent publisher located in Vermont. We publish several children’s nonfiction series, as well as a variety of adult titles relating to sports, parenting, and teaching. Our upcoming book, which will be part of our "Build It Yourself" series, entitled Amazing Arctic and Antarctic Projects You Can Build Yourself! by Carmella Van Vleet will educate kids ages 9-12 about Polar regions and their importance through fun, hands-on activities. 1. Through partnership with IPY, we hope to provide free educational content from our upcoming book. All text will be specially written by our author, Carmella Van Vleet, and edited in-house at Nomad Press. The educational content will include activities to be released quarterly through the IPY website over the course of the next year. Through this contribution, we will become “Contributors” to IPY and have a page for Nomad Press on the IPY website. 2. We will link to IPY from our website (http://www.nomadpress.net) and include information on IPY and its projects. 3. We will work with IPY to co-promote International Polar Year in conjunction with our upcoming book (endorsed by IPY). This would happen when the book goes to press in May 2008. We will collaborate at that time and use our respective networks to promote both projects. 4. We would require usage of the IPY logo on the cover and perhaps throughout our book (perhaps a “special edition”) and would appreciate an endorsement to appear on the front or back cover of the book. Ultimately, we would help to leave an IPY legacy through our book that will help kids learn about Polar regions and their conservation.

What significant advance(s) in relation to the IPY themes and targets can be anticipated from this project?
1. Outreach to younger generation through educational contributions. 2. Free educational content. 3. Expansion of the IPY website. 4. Increasing awareness of Polar regions through our upcoming book Amazing Arctic and Antarctic Projects You Can Build Yourself! 5. Publicity 6. Co-promotion to create maximized excitement for both projects.

What international collaboration is involved in this project?
No international collaboration is involved, other than any email promotion and/or event promotion involving educational material and our book.

Significant facilities will be required for this project:
• Web support (contributor page creation and insertion of educational content and activities) • Promotional coordination • Support for branding and logo usage. This project is easily incorporated into any educational projects and can be coordinated with Nomad Press.

Will the project leave a legacy of infrastructure?
Yes, our book will be branded with the IPY logo and will create an addition to the “IPY Library.” It will be available in bookstores throughout the United States as well as on Amazon.com. Additional sales may be negotiated through IPY in the future.

How is it envisaged that the required logistic support will be secured?

PROJECT MANAGEMENT AND STRUCTURE

Is the project a short-term expansion (over the IPY 2007-2008 timeframe) of an existing plan, programme or initiative or is it a new autonomous proposal?

This project involves Nomad Press’ upcoming book Amazing Arctic and Antarctic Projects You Can Build Yourself! which remains independent of IPY and full property of Nomad Press. Collaboration will continue with Rhian Salmon and Louise Hoffman as well as any other members of the IPY team.

How will the project be organised and managed?
The project will be managed by both Nomad Press and IPY.

What are the initial plans of the project for addressing the education, outreach and communication issues outlined in the Framework document?
The first step will be to send IPY educational content specially adapted from our upcoming book in order to begin our educational partnership with IPY. From there, updated educational content will be supplied to IPY on a quarterly basis. This will establish the first term of our project—to become a “Contributor.”

What are the initial plans of the project to address data management issues (as outlined in the Framework document)?

How is it proposed to fund the project?
Since there should be no additional cost to this project, no additional funds are needed at this time.

Is there additional information you wish to provide?
Mid-October 2007 – educational content release begins on a quarterly basis. May 2008 – book release and promotional collaboration.
