PROPOSAL INFORMATION

(ID No: 1248)

Polar Experience at the BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition 2008  (Polar Experience)

Outline
The Polar Experience will be a special attraction at the BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition, 10th – 12th January 2008 in the RDS, Ballsbridge, Dublin Ireland. The objective of the exhibit is to make visitors to the Exhibition, both secondary school students and members of the public, to think about what conditions are like in polar regions and what it would be like to be involved in an expedition. The exhibit will consist of a marquee and a 40’ refrigerated container. In the marquee will be a display of tents, equipment, rations etc used by the likes of Scott and Shackelton in the early 20th century expeditions to Antarctica. There will also be a display of the equipment as used in present day expeditions. The historical display will be presented by a team of enthusiasts who specialise in the re-enactment of exploration in this period. The modern day display will be organised by volunteers from the British Antarctic Survey. The refrigerated container will be ‘landscaped’ with snow/ice and a track will be created from end to end. Visitors will be challenged to ‘survive’ the sub-zero temperatures (minus 20 degrees) by walking through the ice channel.
