PROPOSAL INFORMATION

(ID No: 500)

Monitoring Land/Ocean Surface Exchange of Energy & Matter in the Arctic and the Antarctic  (Micrometeorological Research in the polar regions)

Outline
1. Monitor the surface exchange of energy, water, CO2 and CH4 using the eddy covariance technique, in conjunction with the technology of laser spectroscopy, on a daily to annual time scales; 2. Develop procedures to scale up process studies to regional and climate models capable of better reproducing the essential features of the sub-grid scale land-atmosphere interactions; 3. Use, and further develop remote sensing techniques and validate atmosphere-cryosphere-land interactions from in-situ and remotely sensed data; and 4. Study the energy and water budgets as derived from field process experiments, climatological observation and assimilated data fields, and determine the degree to which these are properly represented within LSP (land surface parameterization) models, hydrological models and re-analyses products.

Theme(s)   Major Target
The current state of the polar environment
Change in the polar regions
Polar-global linkages and teleconnections
The polar regions as vantage points
  Data Management
Other Targets

What significant advance(s) in relation to the IPY themes and targets can be anticipated from this project?
1. Understand the interactions between the polar ocean circulation, ice cover and the hydrological cycle 2. Initiate long-term climate research and coordinated enhanced monitoring programs for the polar regions 3. Provide a scientific basis for an accurate representation of the polar processes in global models

What international collaboration is involved in this project?
We didn’t yet have any collaboration internationally. But this project is espected to be coordinated internationally in the near future.

FIELD ACTIVITY DETAILS

Geographical location(s) for the proposed field activities:
Arctic micrometeorological research has carried out at Korea Arctic Dasan station located on 78° 55‘N/11° 56’E in Ny-Alesund, Spitsbergen Archpelago of Norway. And Antarctic research has carried out at Korea Antarctic King Sejong station located on 62˚ 13’S, 58˚ 47’W in King George Island.

Approximate timeframe(s) for proposed field activities:
Arctic: 08/2003 – 12/2010
Antarctic: 12/2002 – 12/2010

Significant facilities will be required for this project:
We have operated some instruments continuously and safely on existing field stations. Therefore we don’t need significant logistics except self-managed regular calibration on their factories.

Will the project leave a legacy of infrastructure?
This project will be carried out on scientific focus; gathering data and its management and analysis.

How is it envisaged that the required logistic support will be secured?
Another national polar operator
Own support

We have used own and another international polar logistics system for the successful operation.

Has the project been "endorsed" at a national or international level?
This project has been endorsed at Korea Arctic and Antarctic Research Program nationally and NySMAC internationally.

PROJECT MANAGEMENT AND STRUCTURE

Is the project a short-term expansion (over the IPY 2007-2008 timeframe) of an existing plan, programme or initiative or is it a new autonomous proposal?
Expansion
Two micrometeorological observations were started on August 2003 at the Arctic Dasan station and December 2002 at the Antarctic King Sejong station, respectively. We use eddy covariance methods to measure the exchanges of carbon dioxide (CO2), water vapor, and energy transfer between terrestrial ecosystem and atmosphere.

How will the project be organised and managed?
This project is a planned and existing programme that has an established management structure.

What are the initial plans of the project for addressing the education, outreach and communication issues outlined in the Framework document?
This project is not a plan for EOC activities.

What are the initial plans of the project to address data management issues (as outlined in the Framework document)?
1. Interactions between the atmosphere, land and snow 2. Interactions between sea ice, oceans and atmosphere 3. Remote sensing, modeling and data management

How is it proposed to fund the project?
This project will be part of programmes already funded.

Is there additional information you wish to provide?
None
