PROPOSAL INFORMATION(ID No: 779)
From the Igloo to the Space Station – Design Concepts for Extreme Environments (Space Igloo)
Outline
People living in the polar region, in cities or settlements, do have a life long experience in living in extreme environments and often on confined indoor space, too. Details in the living and habitation environments can in extreme environments get an extraordinary importance, not observed under normal conditions. By identifying the importance of these details in traditional or modern polar habitation, we hope to foresee problems in designing for coming extreme environments. And by research in these experiences of human habitation, we intend to identify basic key concepts which will be used as a tool for designing for modern extreme environments as the coming human habitation modules for long term space flight or/and modern human habitation in arctic or Antarctic regions as ex. research stations etc. As a part in this process we intend to investigate the use of polar regions for simulations and as a laboratory for developing design for extreme environments. Finally we would like to use the investigations and design results as a public awareness and information programme, by establishing cooperation with The Danish Design Centre resulting in a public exhibition and lecture programme at the centre around these identical problems in designing for extreme environments in polar regions and in human space flight. The project will be performed as a continuously dialogue between architecture, industrial design and innovation and human social sciences.
What significant advance(s) in relation to the IPY themes and targets can be anticipated from this project?
Development of the polar regions as laboratories for design and human factor in surviving extreme environments.Obtaining practical experiences from populations living in the polar regions in creating new methods and technology.Public outreach illustrating the resources of the polar regions.
What international collaboration is involved in this project?
International and polar partners will be identified
FIELD ACTIVITY DETAILS
Geographical location(s) for the proposed field activities:
Arctic and Antarctic region – not yet specified.
Approximate timeframe(s) for proposed field activities:
Arctic: 04/07-09/07 04/08-09/08
Antarctic: 11/07-02/08
Significant facilities will be required for this project:
Transportation, board and lodging for research team in arctic and Antarctic areas. Construction of test sites. Production of prototypes.Construction of exhibition and information materials.(printed, multi-media)
Will the project leave a legacy of infrastructure?
A network between interested parties in the polar regions concerning design and innovation of technology for human residence in extreme environments can be formed on a permanent basis.
How is it envisaged that the required logistic support will be secured?
Has the project been "endorsed" at a national or international level?
NO
PROJECT MANAGEMENT AND STRUCTURE
Is the project a short-term expansion (over the IPY 2007-2008 timeframe) of an existing plan, programme or initiative or is it a new autonomous proposal?
YES
How will the project be organised and managed?
By a project team, including academic and commercial partners.
What are the initial plans of the project for addressing the education, outreach and communication issues outlined in the Framework document?
The results of the project will be used as basis for public exhibitions, information to the media and lectures to specially interested from the academia and the public.
What are the initial plans of the project to address data management issues (as outlined in the Framework document)?
Data will be secured, so results can be reused by other researchers.
How is it proposed to fund the project?
Public research and innovation Funds, private sponsors, commercial contract on parts of the project production
Is there additional information you wish to provide?
None
