PROPOSAL INFORMATION

(ID No: 814)

Study of the Arctic benthic and pelagic biota.  (Study of the Arctic benthic and pelagic biota.)

Outline
The using of the ice class ships such as “ Ivan Petrov ” or “Kolomeitsev”, “ Academician Fedorov ” or other research icebreaker for study of composition, distribution and autecology of bottom and plankton organisms occupying the Arctic basin and adjacent seas. Processing and interpretation of obtained data for the follow purposes :1) clarification of Arctic biodiversity; 2)determination of quantitative characteristics of spatial distribution of macrobenthos; 3) influence of the abiotic factors on distribution of the Arctic organisms; 4) creation of basis for realization of biological monitoring in the research regions.

Theme(s)   Major Target
The current state of the polar environment
Change in the polar regions
Polar-global linkages and teleconnections
Exploring new frontiers
The polar regions as vantage points
  Natural or social sciences research
Education/Outreach and Communication

What significant advance(s) in relation to the IPY themes and targets can be anticipated from this project?
The development of fundamental scope on structure, distribution and functioning of Arctic biota on the species and community levels; possible paths of marine Arctic fauna formation; qualitative variations due to the processes of global change; collecting of supplementary data and new information for the bases of biological monitoring courses of “oceanology” and “regional hydrobiology ” in universities .

What international collaboration is involved in this project?
Cooperation with the biologists of Alfred Wegener Institute, Institute of Polar Ecology (Germany) and University of Alaska (USA) in realization of joint researches and equipment supply of expeditions by the modern equipment for the sampling and preservation of organisms. Coordination of researches with other IPY projects and national programs providing realization of complex study in the Arctic basin and adjacent seas (“ Arctic seas - 2007/08 ” and “ Arctic Regions 2007/08

FIELD ACTIVITY DETAILS

Geographical location(s) for the proposed field activities:
1). Shelf of the East-Siberian and Chukchi seas.2). Continental slope and hollows of the Arctic basin, including Gakkel and Lomonosov ridges , and also outside of the shelf of the Barents, Kara, Laptev, East-Siberian and Chukchi seas.

Approximate timeframe(s) for proposed field activities:
Arctic: July - October 2007 and 2008 years.
Antarctic: n/a

Significant facilities will be required for this project:
It is necessary to supply a possibility for equip and use of the ships such as h/v“Kolomeitsev” for shelf research the s in the East-Siberian and Chukchi seas and REV “ Academician Fedorov” or research icebreaker for study of the Arctic basin. These ships can be used by other contributors of IPY program, within the framework of the complex investigations of water areas.

Will the project leave a legacy of infrastructure?
Is not present.

How is it envisaged that the required logistic support will be secured?
Own national polar operator
National agency
Own support

Has the project been "endorsed" at a national or international level?
ExpectedExpected Russian Academy of Sciences.Organizing Committee of the Russian Federation for the IPY 2007/2008The ministry of natural resources of Russian Federation

PROJECT MANAGEMENT AND STRUCTURE

Is the project a short-term expansion (over the IPY 2007-2008 timeframe) of an existing plan, programme or initiative or is it a new autonomous proposal?

The project is a component of existing and planned activity: program RAS “ the Chukchi Sea and adjacent waters”, and also “ Arctic seas - 2007/08 ” and “ Arctic Region 2007/08 ”.

How will the project be organised and managed?
The researches under the project will be prepared, organized and operated at a national level under the constant coordination with the realization plans of international and others national projects withing IPY frameworks.

What are the initial plans of the project for addressing the education, outreach and communication issues outlined in the Framework document?
The results of the project will be widely presented in the reports and publications and can be used in educational purposes for courses of oceanology and hydrobiology, for distribution the newest knowledge about the Arctic Region biota and it functioning. For processing of the collected materials the students of universities and young specialists will be involved.

What are the initial plans of the project to address data management issues (as outlined in the Framework document)?
The obtained data, after processing and publication of main research results, will be integrated into international data banks as agreed with countries (organizations) performing similar researches in the Arctic Region.

How is it proposed to fund the project?
Prospective sources of financing: State budget and, probably, international sources.

Is there additional information you wish to provide?
None
