Tectonic Evolution of West Arctic - North Atlantic (Franz Josef Land, Svalbard, East and North Greenland, Canadian Arctic)  (?EW?N? (Tectonic Evolution of West Arctic - North Atlantic))

Outline
The connection between North Atlantic and western part of the Arctic Ocean, including the Barents Sea shelf with Franz Josef Land, Svalbard; East and North Greenland, and Canadian Arctic islands, is the key area for understanding the geological construction and tectonic evolution of different types of the Earth crust. The overall objective of project is to build the model of the Earth’s crust and reconstruct the tectonic evolution of this insufficiently known and difficult to access region. The following specific tasks will be addressed: 1) to define the Earth’s crust types on the basis of potential fields (magnetic, gravity) and seismic data; 2) to reconstruct interrelations of different tectonic terranes and their evolution; 3) to identify the tectonic nature and structural significance of Morris Jessup Rise and Yermak plateau; 4) to describe the types of Mesozoic igneous provinces and define their relations; 5) to understand the connection of West Lomonosov Ridge with Laurentia and West of Eurasia.

Input in fundamental knowledge of geological construction and tectonic evolution of West Arctic and North Atlantic. Contribution to modeling plate tectonic processes and mechanism of ocean formation.

What international collaboration is involved in this project?
Close co-operation between Russian institutions and geological surveys of Norway (NPI), Denmark and Greenland (GEUS), Germany (BGR), Canada, Universities of Oslo, Uppsala and Stockholm is critical for integration of previously collected national data with new evidence obtained through IPY activities.

The region between North Atlantic and western part of the Arctic Ocean including Barents Sea shelf with Franz Josef Land, Svalbard, East and North Greenland, Canadian Arctic islands, West Lomonosov Ridge

Approximate timeframe(s) for proposed field activities:
Arctic: 07/2006 – 09/2006      07/2007 - 09/2007      07/2008 – 09/2008

Significant facilities will be required for this project:
Field work will be organized and supported by national organizations based on their own or international logistic facilities. The existing Russian field stations on Franz Josef Land and in Svalbard, as well as available transportation means (helicopters), can be used for implementation of other programs in the study area.

Will the project leave a legacy of infrastructure?
Field activities in Svalbard and on Franz Josef Land may require development of local infrastructure that would rather be left on site for future investigations.

PROJECT MANAGEMENT AND STRUCTURE

Is the project a short-term expansion (over the IPY 2007-2008 timeframe) of an existing plan, programme or initiative or is it a new autonomous proposal?

The project may be considered as an initiative endeavoring to coordinate and unify already ongoing and/or planned national programs over the IPY timeframe

How will the project be organised and managed?
Individual national components of the project will be organized and managed by respective national operators. It is recommended to establish an international working group charged with responsibility to coordinate individual national programs and supervise scientific interpretation of acquired data and subsequent publication of the project results.

What are the initial plans of the project for addressing the education, outreach and communication issues outlined in the Framework document?
The obtained results will be publicized in project reports and scientific papers that can be used for education purposes as demonstrating the improved knowledge about the nature and history of continental margins and oceans. The young scientists and students will be involved in field work and interpretation of the data.

What are the initial plans of the project to address data management issues (as outlined in the Framework document)?
The obtained data will be integrated in international databases, subject to agreement between the participating national institutions

How is it proposed to fund the project?
Individual national components of the project will be funded from respective national budgets, with possible minor support from international sources for coordinating activities of project working group
