PROPOSAL INFORMATION(ID No: 923)
POLAR OZONE: CHALLENGES FROM IGY TO IPY (POCHES)
Outline
The behaviour of polar stratospheric ozone, and its consequences on the earth’s environment and the polar ecosystems are targeted in this workshop. Of particular interest is the worldwide recovery of stratospheric ozone due to the reduction of ozone depleting substances in the stratosphere which has been forecasted to occur in the coming decade. Large uncertainties related to ozone climate interactions and the way they affect the timing of such a recovery. Moreover, the possibility of increase of dynamical activity in the southern hemisphere due to enhanced planetary wave forcing from the troposphere may affect the stability of the Antarctic polar vortex, inducing excursions of ozone depleted air masses over populated regions of the southern hemisphere. The proposed activity consists of a workshop on polar ozone to be held in Tromso, Norway during IPY.The main topics of the proposed workshop are listed as follows:1. Status of research based on long term studies going back to the IGY: Satellite and ground based observations, modeling. UV changes and impact. Policy issues. 2. Current challenges: Ozone depletion at northern latitudes, climate-chemistry interactions/links, regional to hemispheric scale ozone pollution (air quality links).3. Ozone recovery and links to climate change: Modeling and observational systems (satellite, ground based), detection of recovery, precursor scenarios. The future.4. Impact on polar ecosystems and policy issues

What significant advance(s) in relation to the IPY themes and targets can be anticipated from this project?
The evolution of the science of polar ozone and its environment from IGY and IPY will be tackled and thoroughly discussed at the highest scientific level at the workshop. Dissemination of the knowledge is also expected to be of worldwide importance.
What international collaboration is involved in this project?
The workshop involves scientists from a large number of well known Institutions from all over the world who have participated in forefront science of polar ozone in the past 30 years or so.
FIELD ACTIVITY DETAILS
Geographical location(s) for the proposed field activities:
The workshop will take place at Tromso, Norway.
Approximate timeframe(s) for proposed field activities:
Arctic: n/a
Antarctic: 12/06 – 01/09
Significant facilities will be required for this project:
Will the project leave a legacy of infrastructure?
How is it envisaged that the required logistic support will be secured?
Consortium
National agency
Own support
Other sources of support
Has the project been "endorsed" at a national or international level?
It has been endorsed by the International Ozone Commission
PROJECT MANAGEMENT AND STRUCTURE
Is the project a short-term expansion (over the IPY 2007-2008 timeframe) of an existing plan, programme or initiative or is it a new autonomous proposal?
Yes
It is a new autonomous project
How will the project be organised and managed?
The project will include a scientific programme and managing committee involving also members from the institutions involved in the project. This committee will be co-chaired by I. Isaksen, President, S. Godin-Beekmann, Vice President and C. Zerefos, Secretary of IO3C, who will be also responsible for the details of the workshop. In this project assistance and guidance will be provided by two bodies: the Scientific Programme Committee and the Local Organizing Committee in which Members of the well-esteemed body of the International Ozone Commission (IO3C) participate. The Scientific Committee has overall responsibility for the organization of the workshop, with the responsibility for the local organization being delegated to the Local Organizing Committee. In particular, the Scientific Programme Committee has direct responsibility for the format and balance of the Scientific Programme, the selection of speakers and the division of posters into different groups.
What are the initial plans of the project for addressing the education, outreach and communication issues outlined in the Framework document?
What are the initial plans of the project to address data management issues (as outlined in the Framework document)?
How is it proposed to fund the project?
From national and international organizations and registration fee.
Is there additional information you wish to provide?
None
