PROPOSAL INFORMATION

(ID No: 935)

Climate variability and its influences on the state of glaciation of the Antarctic Peninsula region  (Regional climate and glaciation at the Antarctic Peninsula (RCGAP))

Outline
1. Field activity.A new field base will be build up with installation of standard meteorological instruments including AWS and also radiation fluxes measurements and for glaciological research. The latter implies measurement of snow accumulation with estimation of the velocity of outlet glaciers movement and taking ice cores. Special attention will be paid to precipitation measurements and their chemical analysis. 2. Creation the weather diagnosis and forecasting centre on the base of Vernadsky station, Ukraine that could be also used for other IPY activity at this region. 3. The extension of the project will be made on the next, laboratory stage of research.

Theme(s)   Major Target
The current state of the polar environment
Change in the polar regions
Polar-global linkages and teleconnections
Exploring new frontiers
The polar regions as vantage points
  Natural or social sciences research
Education/Outreach and Communication
Legacy

What significant advance(s) in relation to the IPY themes and targets can be anticipated from this project?
Improvement of our knowledge of the present-day state of regional climate of Antarctic Peninsula and hints on future changes mostly due to warming.State of glaciation in interior part of Antarctic Peninsula and its responses to climate warming. Research into the role of decadal change in tropospheric circulation on climate variability.Climate system of the Antarctic Peninsula in context of global changes.

What international collaboration is involved in this project?
Collaboration is proposed with BAS and Peruvian Antarctic Institutions.

FIELD ACTIVITY DETAILS

Geographical location(s) for the proposed field activities:
Islands and coastal zone of Antarctic Peninsula closest to Vernadsky (Faraday) base.

Approximate timeframe(s) for proposed field activities:
Arctic: n/a
Antarctic: 01/07 – 04/07            11/07 – 03/08

Significant facilities will be required for this project:
Helicopter needed in initial stage of project, when field base will be established;Field base with generator and fuel. These resources can be usefully shared with other projects in the region of Vernadsky and Palmer station (USA).

Will the project leave a legacy of infrastructure?
Field observation sites, with a net of automatic weather stations and polygon for glaciological research.

How is it envisaged that the required logistic support will be secured?
Consortium
Own national polar operator
National agency
Own support
Other sources of support

Has the project been "endorsed" at a national or international level?
Yes -The project is a part of National Ukrainian Programme And also this projectIs connected with purposes of the project Antarctica and the Global Climate System (AGCS), submitted to SCAR.

PROJECT MANAGEMENT AND STRUCTURE

Is the project a short-term expansion (over the IPY 2007-2008 timeframe) of an existing plan, programme or initiative or is it a new autonomous proposal?
No
This project is a component of planned activity by National Antarctic Center, UkraineAnd is planned as continuation of research project in Odessa State Environmental University

How will the project be organised and managed?
1.Installation of field base, possibly, before IPY start, during 2006-07 season. At the same time: organization of logistic and weather centre at Vernadsky base; 2.Start of works in 2007. Possible winterover at new base during 2007 (it will be assessed at the place). 3. Continuation of works in 2007-08 season.

What are the initial plans of the project for addressing the education, outreach and communication issues outlined in the Framework document?
The region of future activity has the historical importance, and that will be taken into account when making research.Students of Odessa State Environmental University will be involved in the process of the project planning and preparation, and, possibly, in its fulfilment (it is very desirable for students studying in the field of Polar meteorology established in 2002).

What are the initial plans of the project to address data management issues (as outlined in the Framework document)?
Data will be available to all Polar community

How is it proposed to fund the project?
Partly at National level, and partly via International Cooperation.

Is there additional information you wish to provide?
This project aims to fill out gaps in knowledge that are is for further research and modelling into Antarctic Peninsula regional climate. Newly established field base at Peninsula will be systematically used platforms for microclimatological, glaciological, meteorological etc. measurements. It is thought the contents of science program can be significantly widened when this project will be considered at International level.
